The Dakar Rally is considered to be the toughest motorsport event in the world. The endurance rally is spread over three countries in which participants ride on varying terrain in difficult weather conditions, covering over 9,000 kilometres in just two weeks. The enormity of the race can be gauged from the fact that on an average one participant dies in this gruelling competition every year. Despite the perils, many brave men risk it all to be part of this thrilling race and one such rider was Indian rider KP Aravind. The 15 National Championship winner stepped up the ante and qualified for Dakar 2017 after a strong performance in the OiLibya Rally of Morocco. He was signed by Sherco TVS and became the second rider after CS Santosh to participate in the Dakar Rally.

Sadly for KP Aravind, his Dakar dreams came to an abrupt and early end as he crashed in Stage 3 of the race, thereby ending his Dakar run. The Sherco TVS rider met with an accident 40 kilometres into the stage and has reportedly hurt his shoulder. According to latest reports from Dakar, the medical team hasn’t been able to airlift him to the Jujuy bivouac due to bad weather but luckily there isn’t any serious injury. It would be a bitter pill to swallow for Aravind as he had been training hard for months in France and the fact that he had to retire so early in the race means that he hasn’t gained much experience.

The race never went smooth for the TVS Sherco rider as he fell off the bike in Stage 1 itself, while trying to avoid crashing into a slow rider who changed direction suddenly. He had two broken bones in his left hand and despite the injury, he completed the 803km Stage 2 and bravely said that he desires to finish his debut Dakar. Despite his determination and grit, fate had some other plans in store for KP Aravind but we are sure that he will shrug off the disappointment and will be back much stronger in the 2018 Dakar. We wish him all the luck!
