Like every big motor show worth its name, the ongoing 2016 Auto Expo also has its share of head-turners and alluring metal that made showgoers stop in their tracks. Below, we list the top seven production models and concepts that caught everyone’s fancy this time round

Maruti Vitara Brezza

Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza

There’s no gainsaying just how important the Vitara Brezza is for its maker. Maruti Suzuki’s first attempt at creating a compact SUV, the Vitara Brezza was the cynosure of all eyes at the 2016 Auto Expo, sporting the kind of muscular yet sleek styling that you’d expect from a car in this class.  The petrol variant of the SUV will come with the 1.4-litre K14B engine from the Ertiga, producing 95PS of power and 130Nm of torque. In diesel form the car will be launched with the renowned 1.3-litre unit sourced from Fiat. This unit is good for 90PS and 200Nm. Both these engines come mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.  Heavily loaded with features, the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza will go against the likes of the Ford EcoSport and the Mahindra TUV300 and will be priced between Rs 6 to 10 lakh.

Toyota Innova Crysta

Toyota Innova Crysta

The Toyota Innova, by far India’s favourite MPV, has badly been in need of a revamp for some time now, seeing as how it was launched well over a decade ago. And now, it is here in the form of the new Toyota Innova Crysta at the 2016 Auto Expo. Built on Toyota’s new Toyota New Global Architecture, the Innova Crysta is significantly larger than the old Innova, thus imparting it much more cabin space inside. Two unspecified engines will be on offer, along with choices of either a six-speed manual or six-speed auto transmission. As for creature comforts, the Innova Crysta will feature climate control, voice command, Bluetooth connectivity and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

Ford Mustang

Ford Mustang

The big daddy, the living icon that gave birth to the term ‘muscle car’ or ‘pony car’, the Ford Mustang surely took its sweet time coming to our shores. But, better late than never, the Mustang was proudly shown off at Ford’s stall at the Expo, and it didn’t disappoint. Ford has given the Mustang timely cosmetic and mechanical upgrades to keep up with its more advanced German and Japanese counterparts, and, in its top-of-the-line GT trim, it looks every bit as fast as it goes. Motive power comes from the legendary 5.0-litre Ti-VCT V8, which now makes 435PS of max power and 542Nm of peak torque, mated to a 6-speed Select Sift Automatic transmission with optional paddle shifters. The Ford Mustang will be available in both convertible and fastback versions.

Mahindra XUV Aero concept

Designed fully in-house by 45-year old Ramkripa Ananthan and her 45-strong team at the Mahindra Design Studio in Mumbai, the XUV Aero concept is what happens when its maker give free rein to its designers to express themselves. Echoing the lines of the XUV500, the XUV Aero concept is a coupe-cross over with a suicide door design that will also serve as a demonstrator for Mahindra’s new infotainment and connectivity features on its future production models.  Underneath, the XUV Aero is powered by a density mHawk engine with turbo boost that is reportedly capable of a 0-60kmph sprint in 6 seconds.

Tata Nexon

Tata Nexon

Yet another long-awaited compact SUV made its debut at the 2016 Auto Expo, this time from the house of Tata Motors. Dubbed the Nexon, it was shown in pre-production form at the Expo, but Tata promised showgoers that the final model will look exactly like what we’ve seen. We are guessing that it will be powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that will make somewhere in the region of 90-100PS of peak power, and a 1.3-litre Fiat sourced diesel engine which will make 90PS of peak power and 200Nm of peak torque. Both manual and AMT gearbox options will be on offer with the diesel variant, while the petrol variant will make do with only a manual transmission.

Corvette Stingray

Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

Arguably America’s favourite sports car – and their answer to the Porsches and the Ferraris – the Corvette Stingray, now in its seventh generation, took pride of place at Chevrolet’s stall at the 2016 Auto Expo. Powered by a heartstopping 6.2-litre small block V8 engine that is mated to either a seven-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, the Stingray can accelerate from 0-97kph just under four seconds. Being available only in left-hand drive, the Corvette Stingray will not be plying on Indian roads anytime soon, but that svelte styling and that low-slung bodywork was still a massive draw for attendees at the Expo.

Mercedes-Benz G500 4x4-2

Mercedes-Benz G500 4x4-2

Possibly the one vehicle that you wouldn’t want looming up in your rear-view mirror on the highway, the Mercedes-Benz G500 4x4-2 is the most butch looking SUV you can conceive in this day and age. Unapologetically humongous and with lines that hark back to WWII war machines, the G500 is the ultimate man’s ride. Standing two metres tall and with 450mm of ground clearance (thanks to its portal axles) the G500 4x4-2 is powered by a twin-turbocharged, 4.0-litre V8 that sends 416 PS of power and 610 Nm of torque to all four wheels via an automatic transmission. Everything about this monster flagrantly defies logic and sanity. No wonder the Expo show goers were transfixed by it.
