The hatchback is still the most popular bodystyle when it comes to Indian car buyers and also one of the most important categories of the 2015 Times Auto Awards in partnership with ZigWheels. From the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Abarth Punto Evo, Hyundai i20 Active, Honda Jazz and the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross in the premium segment to mid range cars like the Ford Figo and the Tata Bolt to entry level hatchbacks like the Datsun Go+ and the Renault Kwid, there is something here for everyone.

Maruti Baleno

Maruti Suzuki Baleno

The Maruti Suzuki Baleno is one of the most popular hatchbacks in the country today with sales quickly heading towards a 5-figure mark. The Baleno gets both a petrol and diesel engine that are both mated to a manual 5-speed gearbox. The new Baleno also gets a whole bunch of gizmos on the inside including infotainment options like Apple CarPlay

abarth punto

Abarth Punto Evo

The Abarth Punto Evo is the most powerful affordable hatchback that you can buy in India today and is also the only real hot hatchback which gets a manual gearbox. The 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol 4-cylinder motor makes an impressive 145PS of peak power and is mated to a front wheel drive drivetrain.

Ford Figo

Ford Figo

Ford launched the Figo in an all-new avatar in 2015 and it instantly became one of our most liked hatchbacks of the year. The new Ford Figo shares a lot with its compact sedan brethren, the Aspire and gets two petrol engines and a diesel engine. The larger 1.6-litre petrol engine also gets an automatic gearbox option and over 100PS of peak power making it a great car to drive.

Renault Kwid

The Renault Kwid is one of the most important cars that have been launched this year mainly because the Kwid has brought so much more to the entry level hatchback segment than anything else has. The Kwid is also very spacious, has a big boot and has a micro SUV look to it that until now is unheard of in this segment. All in all, the Kwid is certainly one of the favorites to win this year’s Hatchback of the Year Award and the 2015 ZigWheels Car of the Year Award

Hyundai i20 Active

Hyundai i20 Active

After the success of the Hyundai Elite i20, the Korean car manufacturer launched the cross hatchback version of the popular car in India, the i20 Active. The new i20 Active gets butch styling with plastic claddings, chunkier alloy wheels and a slightly higher ground clearance. The new i20 Active gets both petrol and diesel engine options and is priced at a premium in the hatchback segment.

Hyundai i20 Active

Maruti Suzuki S-Cross

Maruti launched the cross hatchback, the S-Cross in India in 2015 and also launched the upmarket Nexa range of showrooms to go along with it. With two diesel engines, a 1.3-litre and a 1.6-litre engine the S-Cross shows good driving dynamics but hasn’t seen great sales due to its price tag and overall appeal. The S-Cross goes up against the likes of the Hyundai i20 Active.

Honda Jazz

Honda Jazz

The Honda Jazz is one of the favorites for this year’s Hatchback of the Year Award and goes up against the likes of other strong contenders like the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. The Honda Jazz gets both petrol and diesel engines with the petrol getting both a manual and an automatic gearbox. The new Honda Jazz is also a strong contender for the 2015 ZigWheels Car of the Year Award.

tata Bolt

Tata Bolt

The Tata Bolt is a mid-segment hatchback from the Indian automotive manufacturer that has impressed us quite a bit with its levels of equipment and overall packaging. The new petrol Revotron engine combined with the diesel 1.3-litre motor too is an impressive combination. The Tata Bolt is also a popular car for this year’s Hatchback of the Year Awards and goes up against similarly priced cars like the Ford Figo, the Maruti Swift and previous ZigWheels Car of the Year winners like the Hyundai Grand i10.

Datsun Go+

Datsun Go+

The Datsun Go+ is the extended version of the Datsun Go and is the only compact MPV in the country today. With a 1.2-litre engine making 67PS of power and a spacious interior, the Datsun Go+ does have a lot going for it on paper but has not been able to translate it into sales figures.

Recommended Variant : Kwid 1.0 RXT Optional
