Post BMW launched its entry-level hatchback, the 1-series in India with two engine options, a 1.6-litre turbo petrol and the slightly more powerful 2.0-litre turbo diesel mill; at a starting price of Rs. 20.9 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai); the company revealed in UK its eagerly awaited BMW 2-series coupe ahead of its unveiling at the 2014 Detroit Motor Show. Expected to replace the existing 1-Series Coupe, this new 2-Series coupe is based on the 1-Series hatchback but will definitely have more space, sportier looks and feel. At 4432mm in length, 1774mm in width and 1418mm in height, the 2-series is 72mm longer, 24mm wider and 7mm lower than the outgoing 1-series coupé.
It also has a 30mm-longer wheelbase than its predecessor at 2690mm. Speaking of its engines, three engine options will be available at its international launch. The flagship M235i coupé employs a 325PS twin-scroll turbocharged 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder petrol engine, giving it a 0-100km/h time of 5.0sec in standard six-speed manual guise or 4.8sec with an optional eight-speed automatic gearbox.
As far as the standard equipment are concerned, the 2-series coupé in the UK will come with air conditioning, a leather-bound multi-function steering wheel, rear park sensors, automatic dimming rear view mirror and LED tail-lights. The car is due to go on sale in March in the international market and BMW also plans to launch two more models, the 218d and 225d for its line-up in May 2014. We hope, it soon comes to India too!
