The last remnants of pre-season preparation made headlines over the past week

The last seven days saw the final bits of preseason preparation for the 2022 season, via Formula One’s second preseason test at Bahrain, and WEC’s Prologue event at Sebring. WRC also announced some alterations to this season’s Ypres Rally route.  Here’s everything that went down:

Formula One

With the 2022 Formula One season just around the corner, the teams went over to the Bahrain International Circuit to put their challengers through the final three-day preseason test of the season. In the final day, it was reigning champion Max Verstappen setting the quickest time for Red Bull Racing.

That aside, we saw one final spicy twist in the driver market, thanks to Nikita Mazepin’s contract termination from Haas. In a surprising turn of events, Kevin Magnussen will be reuniting with F1 and the Haas F1 team on a multi-year contract. The surprises might continue into the opening round of the season with Daniel Ricciardo testing positive for COVID-19 during the test. So Alpine reserve driver and 2021 Formula 2 champion Oscar Piastri will stand in for the vacant McLaren seat should Ricciardo not be cleared to race.

Ahead of the 2022 FIA World Endurance Championship season opener,  there was a small two-day prologue session in Sebring. Even though part of the second day was cut short due to inclement weather, it was  Jose Maria Lopez who set the quickest time for Toyota Gazoo Racing. The season kicks off at the 1000 Miles Of Sebring.

WRC

There’s still some time before the WRC Ypres Rally begins on August 18, but organisers have already revealed the route, and there’s one significant change this time.It will no longer use the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, as the rally was clashing with preparations for the Formula One Grand Prix. The revised route will have a power stage in the Kemmelberg hills situated 10km southwest of rally headquarters in Ypres

The coming week is set to be action-packed, with the Formula One, Formula 2, and Formula 3 season openers in Bahrain. The WEC season starts in Sebring, while MotoGP racing action returns with the second round of the season at the new Mandalika circuit.
