BMW has added another M model to its Indian lineup, this time it’s the M2. It is a 2-door, 4-seater performance sports car, being offered as a completely built-up unit (CBU) in our market, priced at Rs 98 lakh (ex-showroom).

Powerhouse

The M2 packs a 3-litre twin-turbo, inline-six petrol engine dishing out 460PS and 550Nm, making it the most powerful M2 ever. It comes paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, sending power to the rear wheels. BMW is offering it with a 6-speed manual as well. The M2 can go from 0-100kmph in 4.1 seconds with the auto ‘box and takes 0.2 seconds more with the manual shifter.

With the M Driver’s Package, the M2’s electronically limited top speed climbs up from 250kmph to 285kmph. There are also four drive modes to select from: Efficient, Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus.

Design

The M2 boasts of a sharp design complemented by the aggressively styled grille with black slats (thankfully not as big as some seen on other modern BMWs). It gets adaptive LED headlights and a sportily designed bumper. BMW is also offering the choice of M Shadow Line Lights, which basically add a smoked effect to the headlights.

In profile, the aggressive side skirts, lower ride height, sharper ORVMs, and M2-specific alloy wheels (19-inch front and 20-inch rear) are the real eye-catchers. BMW is also providing it with a black finish for the alloy wheels and a red shade for the M-specific brake callipers, which are otherwise finished in blue.

At the back, it has similar boxing shapes as seen on the front bumper. BMW has also given it a contrast black rear diffuser with typical M-style quad exhaust tips. The carbon-fibre roof is all new for the M2, which is part of the diet to make it lighter than the standard 2 Series Coupe.

Cabin

The M2 comes with M-specific touches inside the cabin, including some red highlights, carbon fibre bits and M-coloured details. You can even have carbon fibre backs on the sportier bucket seats that further reduce the overall weight by 11kg.

In terms of features, the M2’s equipment list includes a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display,  14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, cruise control, heated seats, an augmented reality (AR) heads-up display, paddle shifters, and connected car tech.

BMW has provided it with a load of driver-assistance systems like attentiveness assist, park assist, and reverse assist. Other safety equipment includes a 360-degree camera, dynamic stability control (DSC), cornering brake control (CBC), and multiple airbags.

Competitors

The M2 doesn’t have any direct rivals in the country but its closest competitor, the Porsche 718 Cayman GTS, is priced at Rs 1.64 crore (ex-showroom). Other similarly priced alternatives could be the less powerful but more practical AMG A45 S hatchback or the Audi S5 Sportback.
