  • Toyota Hyryder to break cover on July 01.
  • Maruti’s version is expected to come soon after that.
  • Mild-hybrid powertrain to be developed by Suzuki, while strong-hybrid engine will be developed by Toyota.
  • Both SUVs are planned to be exported to other countries.
  • Series production of Toyota’s SUV to commence in August.

The Toyota Hyryder and Maruti Suzuki’s upcoming Hyundai Creta rival will be the first two important products under Toyota and Suzuki’s joint venture for the Indian market. Toyota’s version will break cover on July 01, while Maruti’s version is expected to be revealed soon after that. Now, a new press release from the manufacturers has revealed plenty of important details ahead of its launch.

Today, the press release has confirmed that the upcoming SUVs will be developed by Suzuki. So it’s safe to say that this SUV will be based on a Suzuki platform and not a localised version of Toyota’s TNGA-B architecture as reported earlier. That said, despite the SUV being developed by Suzuki, it will be manufactured at Toyota’s plant in Karnataka.

We have also got more dope on the engine. The SUV will boast a 1.5-litre petrol engine with both mild-hybrid and segment-first strong-hybrid technology. The former will be developed by Suzuki while the latter will be taken care of by Toyota. Plus, the mild-hybrid unit will be available with an optional all-wheel drivetrain while front-wheel drive will be standard.

What’s more? Both models are planned to be exported to other markets including Africa. The series production of Toyota’s version of the SUV will begin in August, while its unveiling is scheduled for July 01. Maruti’s version is expected to commence a month after the Toyota model has been rolled out.

Both the SUVs are likely to have a starting price of around Rs 10.5 lakh (ex-showroom). It will fend competition from the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, VW Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, and MG Astor.
