Tata Motors' newest SUV, the all-new Sierra, has already given proof of its high-speed capability even before it hits the showrooms. At a controlled top-speed run at the National Automotive Test Tracks (NATRAX) in Indore, the turbo-petrol Sierra reached 222 kmph, a figure hitherto seldom associated with any family-oriented compact SUV. The run was done on the high-speed oval, India's only test facility capable of safely verifying such speeds, and gave us an early look into the engineering intent behind Tata's new powertrain.
The Sierra that reached this figure came fitted with Tata's all-new 1.5-litre T-GDI turbo-petrol engine, belonging to the same family that also does duty in the Harrier and Safari petrol variants that are set to be launched soon. In its Sierra avatar, the motor sends out 160 PS and 255 Nm, paired to a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The powertrain is front-wheel-drive, but the SUV simply didn't bat an eyelid as it neared the 200 kmph mark on the banked NATRAX loop.

This run of 222 kmph reflects not just sheer engine performance but also the Sierra's aerodynamics, gearbox mapping, and chassis set-up. This SUV's long wheelbase, solid body structure, and wind-cheating front end contribute to stability at speed. Legally, nobody is going to attain this speed on public roads, but the NATRAX test shows that the Sierra is engineered to cruise comfortably, overtake with confidence, and handle high-load situations without strain.

But the Sierra's new-generation design isn't solely about style: the clean surfacing and tight panel gaps bring in noticeably reduced drag compared to older Tata SUVs. Further helping the cause are optimised 19-inch alloys and the stiffer body structure of the ARGOS platform.

At high speeds, the long and flat roofline and flush door handles tend to reduce the turbulence along the sides. Individually, they are small factors, but all put together, they help the Sierra to manage a stable aerodynamic profile at triple-digit speeds.
This top speed run also marks Tata Motors' direction towards more performance-oriented products, in line with global trends where turbo-petrol engines have replaced diesels in many markets. The Sierra, positioned as a premium lifestyle SUV, gains further credibility from this milestone among buyers appreciative of design and capability.

A top-speed run may sound like a bragging right, but it actually tells you something important: the Sierra isn’t just another SUV; it gets some seriously capable underpinnings, too. Are you impressed with the new Sierra? Let us know in the comments.
