Tata Motors is set to enter the CNG segment with the launch of the Tiago and Tigor CNG in early 2022. Unofficial bookings have already begun at select dealerships across the country. The next Tata that could be offered with the eco-friendly option could be the carmaker’s new micro SUV, the Punch. We tell you the reason why this could become a reality.
All three models come equipped with Tata’s familiar 86PS 1.2-litre petrol engine, paired with a 5-speed manual and optional 5-speed AMT. The CNG models will likely be offered only with the 5-speed manual ‘box to keep costs in check. Also, when driving in pure CNG mode, there will be a slight drop in power.
The Punch CNG would also make sense for Tata as its alternatives like the Ignis, Swift, Magnite, and Kiger don’t get a CNG option. This means the Tata would be at an advantage as it will be the only choice in its price bracket to offer a CNG option right from the factory.

Currently, Maruti and Hyundai are the only carmakers to offer CNG models right from the factory. Tata will be the third, and we expect manufacturers like Honda and Toyota to join the game as they have been testing models with CNG kits.
The Punch CNG, if it becomes a reality, is likely to be limited to lower- and mid-spec trims, at an expected premium of Rs 60,000 to Rs 80,000. Currently, the SUV is priced from Rs 5.49 lakh (ex-showroom).
