With already 16,500+ orders in India, it’s sure going to be quite a wait for those who have booked their off-roader in Australia

  • Suzuki Jimny five-door racks over 500 bookings in Australia.
  • The SUV is expected to launch in India soon, before making its way abroad.
  • Five-door Jimny’s primary production base is in India.
  • It’s powered by a 104PS 1.5-litre petrol engine, paired with standard four-wheel drive.
  • Expected to be priced from around Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom).

When the Suzuki Jimny three-door broke cover globally, the tiny, cutesy SUV was so popular that getting your hands on one was like gold. Now, with the more practical five-door model debuting in India and slated to go on sale in international markets, it not only has a long order book in India, but in select countries where it will go on sale, like Australia.

To put things into context, the Jimny five-door has already racked up over 16,500 orders in India itself. In Australia, reportedly, the SUV has racked up over 500 bookings with more piling up. And considering that India is the primary export base for the Jimny five-door, our fellow Australians can surely expect a lengthy waiting period for the more practical off-roader.

The main difference between the three-door and five-door Jimny is the fact that the latter is longer and packs an extra set of doors. This boosts the practicality of the SUV immensely, considering occupants sitting in the rear now have their own set of doors. However, can it seat plus-sized in comfort? You can find out the answer for that in this report

Powering the Jimny will be Suzuki’s 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine putting out 104PS and 134Nm. Four-wheel drive with low range is standard, as is the five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmissions. In India, the Jimny will be offered in two broad trims, Zeta and Alpha, and you can read about the variant-wise features here

Maruti Suzuki is expected to announce prices of the Jimny in India soon, and our guess is it’ll start around the Rs 10-lakh mark. It currently locks horns with the three-door versions of the Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha, both of which will get longer five-door iterations soon.
