  • Prices likely to start at Rs 2 crore (ex-showroom).

The Toyota Land Cruiser is making a comeback to the Indian market in a new generation J300-series avatar. It’s an all-new, full-size luxury SUV packed with modern tech and safety features that will be available with diesel powertrains in India.

What’s new in the Land Cruiser?

On the outside, the new Land Cruiser still has the mammoth proportions of its predecessor, with about the same length and wheelbase to ensure that the approach, departure and ramp breakover angles remain unchanged. It has a more modern design with an imposing front grille, LED headlights and taillights and massive alloy wheels sized 18 inches and up.

It’s underpinned by the new GA-F ladder frame platform that helps reduce 200kg overall, and offers better rigidity than the previous 200-series Land Cruiser ladder frame.

Inside, the SUV offers a plush cabin with features such as a 12.3-inch touchscreen, fingerprint-enabled start button sensor and semi-digital driver display. In addition, it gets safety features such as 10 airbags and Toyota Safety Sense suite of advanced driver-assistance and active safety features.

Land Cruiser 300 powertrains

The LC 300 is offered with the choice of 3.5-litre petrol and 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 diesel engines, rated for 415PS and 309PS, respectively, overseas. A single 10-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission is offered and is paired with a standard four-wheel-drive (4WD) system.

For off-roading, the Land Cruiser has a Torsen limited slip rear differential and Multi Terrain Select driving modes for driving on dirt, sand, mud, deep snow and rocky terrains. In addition, it gets a Multi Terrain Monitor with four cameras that help manoeuvre in tricky, low-visibility, off-roading situations.

This tech serves a similar purpose as Land Rover’s ‘see-through bonnet’ that relies on a camera mounted on a front grille to display the surface below the bonnet for better visibility off-road.

The Toyota Land Cruiser will be imported as a completely built-up unit and thus, it’s likely to be priced at around Rs 2 crore (ex-showroom) onwards. It’ll rival flagship SUVs such as the BMW X7, Mercedes GLS and the Range Rover in India.
