The Tucson has everything you’d expect from an SUV worthy of its segment, but it has never managed to set the sales charts alight so far. So, how does the new one compare with its rivals on paper?

The new fourth-generation Hyundai Tucson is getting ready for a launch in India, and it has a fresh look to take on its rivals. It’ll compete in a segment of enviable and capable SUVs such as the Jeep Compass, Citroen C5 and Volkswagen Tiguan. To give you a better idea of what the new Tucson offers compared to the rest of the segment, here’s our specification comparo. Will Hyundai be able to grab a slice of the pie in its segment? That’s what we are going to find out.

Hyundai’s new Tucson is the longest SUV among its rivals and it has the longest wheelbase of the bunch. India gets the extended wheelbase version of the global SUV with better rear seat space. The C5 Aircross is the widest and tallest, and overall, the second largest SUV followed by the Tiguan. The Jeep Compass is the smallest SUV in the lot.

Engine And Capability

The Tucson will get both petrol and diesel powertrain options. The base engine is a naturally aspirated (NA) petrol engine, but the diesel engine is punchier. Here’s how the oil burner compares with the other diesel engines offered on rival SUVs:

The Tucson’s engine has similar displacement as its rivals, but it makes more power and torque. It’s paired with Hyundai’s 8-speed automatic transmission and will be available with an all-wheel drive (AWD) option. The Citroen C5 Aircross comes a close second, while the Jeep Compass is the least powerful of the lot. That said, the Jeep is the only to offer a manual ‘box, while the other two are automatic only. Weirdly, Jeep still offers the automatic transmission with the Compass only with the all-wheel drivetrain.

VW Tiguan is the most powerful SUV of the bunch

Without a turbocharger, the Tucson’s petrol engine makes the least power and torque among its rivals. Similar to the Alcazar, it’ll be the base engine on offer, with a standard 6-speed automatic and no manual gearbox option. Rivals get a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission (DCT), and the VW Tiguan blows the competition out of the water with the highest 190PS power output among all engines, petrol and diesel. The Tiguan also gets all-wheel drive as standard, while the other two get front-wheel drive only with their petrol engines.

All four SUVs are feature-packed with a host of premium infotainment and comfort equipment. Each offers ambient lighting, a powered driver’s seat, cruise control, keyless entry and go, ISOFIX child seat mounts and hill start assist. The Tucson gets the largest infotainment touchscreen paired with a Bose sound system.

The Citroen and Volkswagen SUVs have smaller touchscreens and neither of them offers a wireless phone charger or cooled seats. The C5 Aircross also lacks connected car tech – a fairly common feature in modern cars. As for the Tiguan, it gets wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, not wireless.

The rest of the equipment list is on par with rivals, but the Tucson does one-up the rest with its safety features.

Six airbags, stability control and tyre pressure monitoring (TPMS) are par for the segment, but the Tucson gets advanced driver assistance and active safety features – the full suite of features that had been missing from the segment even though less expensive compact SUVs such as the MG Astor and Mahindra XUV700 offer it, too.

That said, even though the Tiguan, C5 Aircross and Compass don’t offer ADAS, they each have select active safety features. The Jeep has a 360-degree camera, the Citroen has parking assistance, and the Tiguan has adaptive headlights.

The Hyundai Tucson is shaping up to be a well-equipped SUV for its segment. It’s likely to be pricier at the entry-level than the Compass, but it surely does seem like a sensible buy, considering that it looks unique, gets plenty of features, and the engines have enough poke.  For the real-world driving experience, stick around for our Tucson first drive review.
