The Global New Car Assessment Program (GNCAP) has bestowed the Mahindra XUV700 with the “Safer Choice” Award. Mahindra had submitted the SUV again for testing its electronic stability control (ESC) and pedestrian protection systems, and you can watch a video of the test below.
Previously, the XUV700 had achieved a top five-star safety rating in Global NCAP tests conducted last year. It had received four stars for child occupant protection, and five stars for adult safety.
The XUV700 AX7 variant gets ADAS features such as forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive headlights, traffic sign recognition, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist and Smart Pilot Assist.
In the top-spec AX7 Luxury Pack variant, you also get adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality and a 360-degree camera. This variant also adds a driver’s knee airbag for a total of seven airbags.
Stability control is present from the mid-spec AX5 trim level onwards.
Although the base-spec XUV700 only has government-mandated safety features, its overall structural integrity was enough for the SUV to achieve five stars in GNCAP’s safety tests in 2021.
It comes with dual front airbags, ABS, rear parking sensors and ISOFIX child seat mounts as standard. For now, you have to stretch your budget to the AX5 variant to get curtain airbags, and side airbags are offered on the AX7 trim onwards.

Upcoming government regulations will make six airbags mandatory for all new cars later this year. In the same vein, Global NCAP is upping its safety standards as well. David Ward, the President of the Towards Zero Foundation, says, “the evolution of our testing requirements under the new protocols which come into effect from next month are intended to take the progress we have seen over the last eight years to the next level.”
