The Skoda Kylaq is the most affordable SUV on sale from the Czech automaker in India, retailing between Rs 7.89 lakh and Rs 14.4 lakh (ex-showroom). At this tag, it brings a well-packaged sub-compact SUV experience across four variants, to contest for a good value for its asking prices. While it sits in a rather crowded segment with strong alternatives, does it truly justify its price? Here’s an analysis based on its strengths and weaknesses:
The Kylaq’s strength starts from right how it looks. Its clean and timeless European styling ensures that the SUV will age well without feeling outdated. In fact, it also has as many as seven colour options – pretty much something to suit every need.
It brings a good balance between sporty and practical design, with functional dimensions like 189 mm ground clearance for tackling speed breakers.

The cabin is thoughtfully laid out, providing ample space for four tall occupants and integrating practical storage solutions for daily use.

Its driving performance is a standout feature, with a responsive 1-litre 3-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that’s smooth in urban settings and confident on highways. The available manual and automatic transmissions cater to diverse driving needs, while the car’s balanced suspension and sharp steering make up for a great driving experience.

Additionally, safety is a priority, with a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating and essential features like six airbags, ABS with EBD and traction control.
Despite its strengths, the Kylaq doesn’t completely outshine its rivals. Its interiors, while functional, lack the premium feel offered by competitors like the Kia Sonet or Mahindra XUV 3XO.

The rear seat width is limited, making it less comfortable for three passengers, and the rear camera quality leaves room for improvement.

Performance in hilly areas can feel inconsistent due to turbo lag, and city mileage dropping to 7-9 kmpl could be a concern for budget-conscious buyers. Additionally, the absence of diesel, hybrid, or CNG options limits its appeal for those seeking alternative fuel choices.
The Skoda Kylaq is complemented by a solid build, good safety features, and engaging drive. While it may not lead in every category, it’s a strong contender for buyers who prioritize driving dynamics, practicality, and a clean design. However, if premium interiors or fuel versatility are non-negotiables, other options might be more appealing. As for rivals, the Skoda Kylaq alternates with the likes of Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Tata Nexon and the upcoming Kia Syros.
So, what’d be your pick? Will you go with the Kylaq or would you prefer any of its alternatives? Let us know in the comments below.
