After a long wait, the 2025 Tata Sierra has finally been launched in the Indian market at a starting price of Rs 11.49 lakh (ex-showroom). It carries the reminiscence of the OG Sierra and while the original came with a 4X4 setup, which the new one doesn’t get, Tata has revealed that the 2025 Sierra will get an all-wheel-drive powertrain soon.
So if the new Sierra is going to be an SUV which can tackle challenging terrains, we will take a deep dive into its off-road specifications to figure out how capable it is actually going to be.
The Tata Sierra has been built on Tata’s new ARGOS platform which stands for All-Terrain Ready, Omni-Energy And Geometric Scalable Architecture. This means that while the current Sierra is front-wheel-drive, the scalable nature of this new platform will allow it to support an all-wheel-drive setup.

However, being based on a monocoque chassis means that it likely may not be as capable off the road as any proper off-roader built on a ladder frame chassis, even with an all-wheel-drive powertrain.

Approach Angle |
26.5 degrees |

Ramp Over Angle |
23.1 degrees |
|
Departure Angle |
31.6 degrees |

These numbers might not mean a lot when alone, so to make you understand better, we’ll compare them to an actual off-road focused vehicle – the Mahindra Thar ROXX.

Approach Angle |
41.7 degrees |
|
Ramp Over Angle |
23.9 degrees |
|
Departure Angle |
36.1 degrees |

In all these cases, the Thar ROXX has higher angles, and during off-roading, higher angles result in better capabilities. If we look at the approach and departure angles, there is a stark difference, which means the Sierra won’t be able to climb rocks or go through extremely rough terrains without sustaining some damage to the bumpers.
However, the angles are still not bad for an urban compact SUV because it will still be able to go over bad roads, rocky surfaces, and slight off-roading will not do any major damage.
The ramp over angles, however, is very close to the Thar ROXX, which means you can still take it over challenging terrains and you won’t have to worry about scraping the Sierra over steep undulations. A ground clearance of 205 mm will also come in handy while driving over those harsh terrains.
It also gets a water wading capacity of 450 mm, which is not a lot when compared to off-roaders, but it will still be enough for shallow river crossings.

As of right now, the Tata Sierra is available only in a front-wheel-drive setup with the powertrain options mentioned above. We still don’t know which engine option will come paired with the all-wheel-drive setup or if Tata will offer an AWD powertrain with the ICE (internal combustion engine) Sierra.

But getting the off-road capable powertrain with the electric version of the Sierra will not be difficult as we’ve already seen that in the Harrier EV.
Is the 2025 Tata Sierra going to be a very capable off-roader? We don’t think so. Tata did claim that the AWD Sierra will be capable of going off the road and we believe them, but thinking that the Sierra will rival actual off-roaders in capabilities is being a little too optimistic.

In reality, the Sierra AWD will be a good option for those who drive on rough terrains occasionally to visit their farmhouses, and with the numbers mentioned above, it will be able to handle small challenges with ease. It might not be a core off-roading vehicle, but it will still be better on rough surfaces when compared to other compact SUV rivals.
