Enthusiasts need not worry about compromising on SUV’s off-roading capabilities with the turbo-petrol option

  • Mahindra to launch new Scorpio on its 20th anniversary in June.
  • The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine will be a straight lift from the XUV700.
  • Prices expected to start from Rs 10 lakh onward.

Mahindra is gearing up to launch the new Scorpio in India likely this June, on the 20th anniversary of the SUV. It will get plentiful new features and has even grown in size. There is good news on the powertrain front as well. Not only does the third-generation model of the Scorpio get a turbo-petrol engine in addition to the diesel, it also gets a four-wheel drive option for both motors.

The new Scorpio will borrow the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine from the XUV700 and power figures will be similar, so around 200PS. It’ll be offered with both manual and automatic transmissions. Thus, like its frame-based sibling, the Thar, the new Scorpio will also offer four-wheel drive in petrol guise. Thankfully, customers opting for the petrol powertrain will not have to compromise on off-road abilities of the new model.

Coming to the diesel engine option, the 2.2-litre mill will likely be offered in two tunes: 130PS (from Thar) and 155PS (XUV700 diesel’s base tune). The base variant (and motor) is likely to get a 6-speed manual only, while the 6-speed automatic and all-wheel drive will be reserved for higher trims.
