Maruti Suzuki has been a household name for decades now, catering to the needs of the masses. Known for their ICE-powered cars, the popular automaker is now shifting some of its focus to the EV space. Their first electric vehicle will be the e Vitara, which first made its India debut at the Auto Expo 2025.
In this report, we take a look at why the e Vitara will be significant for Maruti in India and the impact it could have on the Indian auto industry. So, without beating around the bush, here’s our unfiltered opinion on the same:
Maruti in India has a following of its own, and is arguably the biggest auto manufacturer on the shores with a wide range of successful vehicles. Maruti Suzuki will be setting foot in a completely new space. This means there would be high expectations, and this move could also pave the way for Maruti in the EV sector.
The e Vitara is essentially the production-ready version of the eVX concept, and is based on the EV-specific "HEARTECT-e" platform. This platform allows high-capacity batteries and eAxle to support the EV and help it perform better.
Before talking about the importance and impact of the e Vitara, let’s first take a look at what it packs. Its features list includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10-inch digital driver display, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a fixed glass roof, a 10-way powered driver seat, ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera, ADAS, and more!
Here is a closer look at the specifications:

While the exact numbers are yet to be revealed, it has been disclosed that e Vitara will be offering over 500 km of range!
As you might have already noticed, the e Vitara comes with plenty of premium features that make the cabin experience a whole lot better and comfortable. The e Vitara introduces larger displays, which keep it relevant in the modern day when large screens have become the trend. Moreover, comfort-oriented and feel-good features such as multi-colour ambient lighting, a 10-way powered driver seat, a fixed glass roof and a 10-speaker Infinity sound system have also been introduced in a Maruti vehicle for the first time.
Most Maruti cars, including the entry-level Alto, come with 6 airbags as standard. However, the e Vitara takes the safety aspect up a notch by offering 7 airbags for the first time on a Maruti. Furthermore, it also introduces Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features such as lane-keep assist, auto emergency braking, and more.
It is important to keep in mind that the e Vitara is not just an electric Maruti vehicle, but is rather a premium Maruti offering. This also makes a statement that Maruti can also make premium cars with top-notch amenities and advanced safety features like ADAS. We also expect these features to eventually be introduced on other compelling Maruti cars like the Grand Vitara and Brezza.
While Maruti cars are known to dominate the segment that they are in, it won’t be very easy for e Vitara to dominate the compact electric SUV segment, as there are plenty of key players already offering a top-notch package. The key rivals include the Tata Curvv EV, Hyundai Creta Electric, while more premium competitors include the MG ZS EV, BYD Atto 3 and Mahindra BE 6.
With so many options already available in the market, it won’t be a cakewalk for Maruti to attract buyers. However, it is also important to note that the compact SUV space is one of the most popular ones in India, and more options are always welcome. To top that, the e Vitara backs itself with a compelling package which feels competitive against its rivals. That, in combination with Maruti’s wide dealership network and trust in the hearts of Indians, will definitely keep the chances of the e Vitara succeeding in the market high.
Out of the current lot of compact electric SUVs, which one is your favourite? Let us know in the comments section.
Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer of Maruti Suzuki, said, “A critical barrier to the adoption of EVs is the lack of accessible charging. To tackle this issue, we are committed to introducing a reliable and comprehensive EV ecosystem alongside the e Vitara. This will include home charging solutions as well as a nationwide network of fast chargers available at Maruti Suzuki dealerships and service touchpoints. Our goal is to make EVs accessible, convenient, and appealing to a broader set of customers, and this is exactly what we have set out to achieve with the e Vitara.”
His statement talks about the key issue, which is - lack of accessible charging. However, he then addresses the concern by revealing that a completely new ecosystem will be introduced. The new ecosystem will potentially provide more convenience to buyers, and the availability of fast chargers across dealerships and touch points.
Maruti will not just launch an electric SUV, but also take care of other aspects that will ensure a hassle-free experience for buyers.
While there is always a question mark and concern among buyers when it comes to EV charging and the accessibility of charging stations across the country, especially in rural areas, Maruti will be bringing in their own ecosystem. Maruti’s wide distribution network and a strong footprint across the country is a known fact, and that will also play a crucial role in providing charging at various parts of the country. The vast dealership network, support across India, spare part availability, and simple, mechanical-friendly parts will further help Maruti. The presence of Maruti in all parts of the country will also mean that the e Vitara could also potentially attract customers in the lesser-known towns of our country as well.
On paper, the e Vitara looks like a well-rounded SUV with plenty of features, large battery packs and an impressive claimed range. However, the unknown elements will also play a crucial role in determining its success.
When evaluating a car, there are certain aspects that go beyond what meets the eye, things that aren’t just seen but rather felt. The way a car absorbs potholes, the confidence it inspires around corners, and even the sense of space and comfort in the second row are all intangible qualities that can define its success. These are elements that can’t always be spotted on a spec sheet but are critical to a car’s real-world appeal.
Based on first impressions, the Maruti e Vitara seems to have the right fundamentals in place. However, only time will tell how the car behaves on a daily basis and integrates into daily life.
Being an EV, the battery seems to have raised the floor quite a bit, and this affects the underthigh support, which will not be liked by tall passengers. However, it offers decent cabin space and comfortable seats, which enhance the overall experience. To get a better understanding, we recommend you go check out the e Vitara at your nearest dealerships as the EV has already started arriving at showrooms across the nation.
After considering and understanding all the factors, it would be safe to say that the e Vitara isn’t just any other car launch; it’s a test to see if there is enough EV appetite in the market. What this means is that the e Vitara’s entry into the mass-premium segment will not just be an extremely important launch for Maruti, but also determine whether consumers in India are accepting the shift towards EVs or are still contemplating over the segment.
Another important aspect is that Maruti will have to market the e Vitara in such a way that buyers actually see the premium quotient, and the “should I spend Rs 20 lakh on a Maruti?” question should not affect their buying decision.
The e Vitara will be exported to around 100 countries including markets in Europe and Japan. These exports will begin in the current fiscal year - 2025-26.
The success of the e Vitara could also be a gateway to introducing more mass-market EVs on our shores. Probably, a Fronx EV to rival the Punch EV? Or a Swift EV to take on the Tiago EV?
Overall, good news for the e Vitara will mean good news for the Indian automotive industry. After the initial impressions, what are your thoughts about the e Vitara? Let us know in the comments section.
