The sleek Tachyon Nb features extensive use of Niobium to aid its speed

The Tachyon Nb

Lightning Motorcycles, a US based manufacturer of high performance electric bikes, has unveiled a new superbike aimed at breaking the current Land Speed Record at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Called the Tachyon Nb, it has been developed in collaboration with Companhia Brasileira de Metalurgia e Mineração (CBMM), a specialist in Niobium technology.

The ‘Tachyon Nb’ name has been derived from the scientific hypothesis proposed in the 1960s that states that a tachyonic particle possesses the potential to exceed the speed of light and reach the moon in less than a second.

Living up to its name, the Tachyon Nb features a streamlined design, with the sleek front fairing designed to achieve maximum aerodynamic efficiency. The front wheel too is enclosed to negate the effects of turbulent air vortices coming off an open wheel.

The ‘Nb’ in the Tachyon’s name is to flaunt the extensive use of Niobium in the bodywork and chassis, especially in the steel tubing and swingarm that help ensure optimum performance during high-stress use. Lightning Motorcycles claim that using Niobium has resulted in a stronger and lighter body.

As Niobium is also a stable element at extreme temperatures, it has been used in the brake rotors to improve braking efficiency at high temperatures. All of this results in the Tachyon Nb being capable of pushing the limits of speed to cross the 400kmph mark.

While the current land speed record belongs to the Voxan Wattmann clocking a speed of 455kmph at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida with double WorldSBK Champion Max Biaggi at the controls in November 2021, there is ambiguity in this attempt being the official electric two-wheeler speed record, as there are questions raised over the equipment used to record the speed during this attempt.

So if Lightning Motors is able to pull off what it has promised with the Tachyon Nb, they’ll soon be holding the land speed record for electric motorcycles.
