The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is a culmination of many ‘firsts’ for BMW. The first tall-hatchback, the first 3-cylinder and the first BMW with front wheel drive, the 2 Series Active Tourer will most likely be one of the most important cars to come out of BMW’s stable this year. The BMW 2 Series will most definitely make it to India soon to combat the rather popular Mercedes-Benz B-Class. The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer will cater to young families looking for a luxurious, sporty and yet, practical approach to motoring.
The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer has been designed with a high level of versatility and functionality in mind. Like its biggest rival, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class, the Active Tourer offers a level of practicality while adhering to the levels of luxury and refinement a BMW is expected to come with. The driver and passenger enjoy a far higher seating position than a regular sedan giving them a commanding position over the road. The front wheel drive configuration also results in the negation of the transmission tunnel, which in turn means more space in the passenger compartment for occupants and luggage.
Continuing on the interior, the sheer area combined with the large greenhouse and the panoramic roof means that the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is as spacious as its biggest competitors. On the exterior front, the Active Tourer looks typically BMW with its twin headlamps and kidney grilles. The grille on the Active Tourer is tilted forward to give the car a more aggressive stance. The car also gets surprisingly short rear overhangs adding to the aggressive look. The distinctive shoulder line on the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer adds to the accentuation of the wheel arches and portrays a sense of forward movement even when stationary. Combined with the distinct BMW C-pillar and the L-shaped tail lamps, the 2 Series Active Tourer instantly and unmistakably looks like a BMW.
The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is being launched with a choice of three brand new engines. For the first time, BMW will employ a 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine (also used in the new Mini) and a new generation 4-cylinder, turbocharged, diesel and petrol mill. The engines will be mounted transversely and will employ BMW’s TwinPower Turbo technology while adhering to Euro 6 emissions standards.
The new 3-cylinder, 1.5-litre, turbocharbed petrol engine, will be badged as the entry level BMW 218i Active Tourer. The new engine will make 138PS of peak power while generating only 115gms per kilometer of CO2. BMW has made sure that the new engine’s balancer shaft is cutting edge to make sure that all the vibrations that are usually found in a three cylinder engine are negated. The larger 4-cyliner, 2.0-litre, turbocharged petrol engine badged the 225i will be the most expensive BMW 2 Series Active Tourer on offer when the car goes on sale later this year. The 225i comes packed with 234PS giving it a 0-100kmph time of a mere 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 235kmph.
The Active Tourer will also come with a new diesel motor, which is of particular importance to India. The new generation 2.0-litre, turbocharged diesel engine produces a respectable 152PS off peak power and 330Nm of peak torque. These impressive figures mean that the diesel will most certainly be a sprightly car behind the wheel. The 218d will have a claimed top speed of 205kmph and will get from 0-100 in 8.9seconds.
The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer harks a new ago in BMW’s glorious history. A few years ago, the idea of BMW making a front wheel drive tall hatchback would be paramount to sacrilege. Now though, BMW has understood market dynamics and has realised that it need a separate vehicle for each category that it caters. The new 2 Series family, including the Coupe, Convertible, Gran Coupe and now the Active Tourer will also most likely spawn a X2 SUV based on the lines of the X6 and the new X4. The 2 Series line, and in particular the Active Tourer will make it to India by early 2015
