Chevrolet has a number of offerings in India but none are clocking decent numbers for the American carmaker. While all the offerings are priced competitively, they fall short in terms of quality, features and after sales service when compared to the competition. The American automaker is gearing up to change its fortunes by launching new products for the Indian market. A few months ago, the Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV was launched to compete with the likes of Ford Endeavour and the Toyota Fortuner.
Now it is ready to land a punch in the crossover segment in India with the Beat Activ. Showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo, the concept received an overwhelming response from potential customers. It wowed them so much that soon afterwards Chevrolet India announced that it will bring the Beat Activ first, shelving the plans to launch the Spin MPV for later.
Based on the new Chevrolet Beat hatchback (which hasn’t been launched in India yet), the Activ will be a rugged version of it. It will feature a crossover stance with black cladding all around the skirts of the car, new front and back bumpers and redesigned roof rails. At the front, it is also expected to carry projector headlamps with LED daytime running lights and LED fog lamps.
The trendy outlook is carried over to the inside as well, with body-coloured fabric accents incorporated with the interior trim. The crossover is expected to come with an updated feature list with automatic climate control and Bluetooth-enabled music system with audio streaming.
Under the hood, it is currently unknown whether it will be a diesel- or a petrol-powered car. Whatever makes the cut, Chevrolet is expected to use the same engine that powers the current Beat hatchback. While the current 1.2-litre petrol mill churns out 78PS of power and 106.5Nm of torque, the 1.0-litre diesel motors produces 57PS of power and 142.5Nm of torque. However, we don’t rule out the possibility of the same engine being re-tuned to produce more power for the crossover.
Expected to launch in 2017, the Beat Activ will be the first in its segment to offer a crossover version and hence will not have any direct competition. However, if packaged generously both inside and under the hood, the crossover can potentially question the price tags of the VW Polo Cross, Hyundai i20 Active and Fiat Avventura.
