  • Maruti Suzuki Raid-De-Himalaya Rally - Edition 18

The 18th edition of the Maruti Suzuki Raid-De-Himalaya kicked off on Saturday, October 8th. This rally has come to replace the earlier Himalayan rally, which was considered one of the toughest rallies in the world. It is by far the 'highest' motor rally owing to the altitude it covers in the Himalayas. This rally started off from Manali on Saturday and is now in its second leg.

This year the first leg of the Rally went from Manali to Kaza (in Spiti Valley) crossing Rohtang Pass and Kunzum La. It then moves towards Keylong and Sarchu, and onwards to Leh over the span of the week. It will cover about 2000 km in the Himalayas. For this edition, there are 240 people competing in 155 teams, including all kinds of vehicles and categories. These include: Cars Extreme, Bikes Extreme and Adventure Trial. The Raid has been won nine times by Suresh Rana, who is taking part again. Others to watch out for are Bani Yadav (one of 12 women rallyists) and Sandeep Sharma (who won Dakshin Dare 2016). All makes of vehicles can take part in this rally although it is title sponsored by Maruti. This year Maruti is also getting the Vitara Brezza to take part. It should be interesting to see how that fares.

    सब बकबास है मारुती बस लोगो को बेब्कुफ बना रही है एक ही इंजन डाल कर
Translation: It's all nonsense. Maruti is just fooling people by putting the same engine.

Well, that 1.3 multijet diesel engine that Maruti has is supplied by Fiat. It is a very popular engine because it provides the decent fuel efficiency and performance. It is available in two states of tune - 75 bhp / 190 Nm and 90 bhp / 200 Nm. Yes, it's true that this engine is used on a whole bunch of Maruti diesel vehicles - the Swift, Ritz, Baleno, Vitara Brezza, S-Cross 1.3, Ciaz, Ertiga. It is also used by Tata in the Vista, Manza, Zest and Bolt. Chevrolet uses a version of it on the Chevrolet Enjoy, Sail U-Va and Sail sedan. It uses a 3-cylinder version of it on the Chevrolet Beat. Premier uses this engine on the Premier Rio (@JOY MRC has one). Fiat uses this engine in the Linea, Punto, Avventura and Fiat 500. With so many cars using the same engine, it has actually been called a "National" engine by some people!

Raid de Himalaya called off after biker dies in crash
We just got to hear that the 18th Maruti Suzuki Raid de Himalaya has been been called off after Subhamoy Paul, Competitor No. 208, a biker, died in a crash near Chatru at about 10 am this morning (Tuesday, Oct 11). Following the crash, officials have called off the rally and all competitors and marshals are making their way back to Manali.
Paul was an avid biker and has been a regular on the racing and rally circuit. He was also instrumental in helping rallyist CS Santosh secure a place in the Dakar Rally (according to a tweet from Santosh). Paul was riding a KTM 500 EXC in this Raid De Himalaya.
Initial reports suggest that Paul suffered a head injury after hitting a rock, even though he was wearing a helmet.
