  • Tamo Racemo Sportscar Unveiled

Who would have thought that Tata Motors will launch a sports car! To everybody's surprise, Tata Motors revealed a performance sub-brand called 'Tamo' last week, that will launch a two-seat mid-engine sports car ahead at the Geneva Auto Show on 7th March. The Tamo Futuro that was teased recently, which appears to be compact in proportions is touted to be designed on the lines of mid-engined two-seat vehicles like the Opel Roadster and Toyota MR2. According to the Tata Motors, the Futuro will be “a stunning-looking car for the money.”

Tata Motor's new sub-brand will operate with only two platforms instead of the six used by Tata Motors presently. Both these platforms will be modular in nature and one of them is the Advanced Modular Platform (AMP). Futuro will be powered by a twin-turbocharged version of the Tata’s familiar 1.2-litre Revotron petrol motor. As we gather from this ET Auto report, the turbocharged 1.2-litre motor will produce more than 180 bhp, and will only have a kerb weight close to 800 kilogrammes. That translates into an impressive power-to-weight ratio, that is comparable to other sports cars out there. Reports also suggest that the chassis was developed by famous designer Marcello Gandini.

Will Tata be able to pull off their effort of creating a niche car that may, in turn, boost their brand value, helping in sales of their other models? Tata motors is said to be working on pricing the Futuro at around Rs 25 lakhs. We will have to wait for 7th of March to know more. What are your comments on the same?

JijoMalayil If Tata, err no. TaMo uses any existing platform, then I feel it'll have to be heavily modified to accommodate a mid-engined layout. 180 bhp with a sub-one-tonne weight sounds bonkers! But wouldn't a front engined, RWD format be more fun, sideways? It'd cost considerably lesser than a car with a mid-engined format, I feel. I'm waiting for the day when India has its own 240 SX, Supra and the likes. It'd be the Desi tuner's dream!
    Keep the rubber side down!
