If you own any of the following vehicles (currently sold in India), Congratulations! You are the proud owner of a proper SUV. Everyone else who may have bought a vehicle with the brochure claiming it is an SUV has actually bought a crossover. So, why did you buy a crossover? Vote below and comment!

What is an SUV - A body-on-frame vehicle which is designed to go off-road. Seen trucks with no body being driven on a highway? Imagine that, scale it back a lot, add a 5/7-seater body on top, off-road suspension and drivetrain (AWD/4WD) and some niceties (like seats!). Some of the SUVs in the list below are actually filled with luxury goodies - but that's beside the point. Example - Mahindra Thar.

What is a crossover - A car with added testosterone (in most cases). Most modern cars are based on a unibody chassis - there is no separate body and lower-frame. Crossovers use the lighter and more rigid unibody chassis to their advantage for on-road performance, handling and comfort while designers beef up their looks. Some crossover chassis can handle the rigours of off-roading too. Example - Renault Duster.

    Chevrolet Trailblazer
    Force Motors Force One
    Force Motors Gurkha
    Ford Endeavour
    Isuzu MU-7
    Land Rover Discovery 4
    Mahindra Bolero
    Mahindra Quanto/NuvoSport
    Mahindra Scorpio
    Mahindra TUV300
    Mahindra Thar
    Maruti Gypsy
    Mercedes-Benz G
    Mitsubishi Pajero Sport
    Premier Rio
    SsangYong Rexton W
    Tata Safari
    Toyota Fortuner
    Toyota Landcruiser LC200
    Toyota Landcruiser Prado

Because it looks like an SUV and that is what matters most
I need the ground clearance of an SUV but do not want the heavy off-road system
I need a big vehicle that is as good on-road as a car
My crossover can give SUVs a run for their money off-road too
I wanted something different. A hatchback/sedan/SUV wasn't cutting it for me
I got a BIG vehicle for a pretty good deal
It fits my purpose best - no other vehicle type comes close
Whaaat? Damn, they told me it was an SUV!

Well, in my case, the XUV500 was a logical upgrade to the Scorpio. After having driven the Scorpio 2.6TDI Dx for 8 years, I was looking for a more comfortable, gizmo laden, safe SUV and the XUV500 fit the bill perfectly.
Besides, the fact that I had invested all these years in ensuring that Mahindra gave me great service made me reluctant to start all over again with another manufacturer [Not that there were too many options in that category 4 years back]
