  • Renault Kwid Racer and Climber to be sold as special edition models!

Update: Kwid Climber Launched in India at Rs 4.3 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Renault showcased two concepts based on the Kwid at the 2016 Auto Expo called the Kwid Racer and Kwid Climber. Now the latest news is that these concepts could be released as special or limited edition models soon. Let’s take a look at what the two concepts have in store. The Kwid Racer concept at the Auto Expo looked stunning to say the least. I was quite surprised by how Renault managed to make an odd looking car like the Kwid into such a brute race machine. The Renault Kwid Racer concept was shod with 18-inch wheels with ultra-low profile tyres. It even had aerodynamic body kit, race bucket seats and a half roll-cage. The concept’s looks were enhanced by a special metallic blue finish.
The Renault Kwid Racer featured wider air intakes, spoilers and a mean looking diffuser. The Renault Kwid Racer also had interiors wrapped in Alcantara, aluminium and carbon fibre for that sports car feel. Inside the Renault Kwid Racer, you’d also find a telemetry data system, four-point race harness, a digital rev counter and a leather-trimmed steering wheel. Except for the body kit, expect none of the above said features to make it to the production version for cost and practicality reasons.
Note half roll cage on the Renault Kwid Racer concept. This obviously won't make it to the final production version. 18-inch wheels fit wheel arches really well. Note the fact that this concept had wheels with five lug nuts instead on the standard three on the regular Kwid. Interiors get Alcantara trim on the dashboard and gives the Kwid Racer a sporty appeal.
The Renault Kwid Climber, unlike the Racer, is an out-and-out off roader with higher ground clearance than the standard car. The Kwid Climber also gets a wider track, shorter overhangs and groovy tyres with an off-road tread pattern. The Kwid Climber showcased at the Auto Expo came with a deep Flame Orange paint scheme and had bigger bumpers, protective moulding on the sides and “diamond-effect” wheels. Most of these changes are likely to be present in the production version. So hurray!
Shark-fin antenna on the Renault Kwid Climber concept looks good.
Diamond effect wheels on the Renault Kwid Climber concept could see light of day
This Flame Orange shade is a looker!
Note grab rail for front passenger in place of the glovebox on top.
The Renault Kwid is powered by a 799cc three cylinder petrol engine that puts out 54PS of power and 72Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox with a claimed ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figure of 25.7kmpl. Howwvere, Renault Kwid 1.0 and Easy-R AMT Renault is now planning to launch a 1-litre variant of the Renault Kwid. Powering this variant is an all-new 1.0 SCe (Smart Control efficiency) engine with DOHC and four valves per cylinder. Power and torque figures for this engine are not available yet. This variant of the Kwid is likely to powered by a 5-speed manual gearbox. The Easy-R 5-speed AMT gearbox is also likely to be on the options list for this variant.
Note the rotary dial for the Easy-R AMT gearbox just under the centre console

The Easy-R gearbox, Renault says, has been derived from their expertise in Formula 1. The AMT box can be controlled via a rotary knob on the dashboard just below the centre console called the Shift Control Dial. Expect Kwid sales to rise after this version is launched.

The racer edition concept looks too sporty...!! But are there any changes being made under the hood?...If the engine is tuned and has more power than normal one then it would be really appreciable!

ViJiL it looks highly unlikely that Renault would tune the engine for more performance for the Renault Kwid Racer edition. A lot of the features you see on the concept car too would not make it to the final production version. However, there is a possibility that Renault might just plonk in the new 1.0-litre petrol engine under the Kwid Racer and Kwid Climber special editions.

Renault Kwid bookings has crossed 1.25 lacs. With the Datsun Redi-GO slated to be priced below the Kwid, Maruti Suzuki will be feeling the heat now!

The Kwid Climber brochure has leaked ahead of its possible launch in India. The more rugged version of the Kwid hatch that was displayed at the Indian Auto Expo last year, has definitely been toned down. Seen are the exclusive blue paint shade with orange accents on the rear view mirrors. Also seen are thick plastic body cladding across the doors, multi-spoke alloy wheels, a 'Climber' badge on the front door. Interiors get orange accents and 'Climber' badging on the headrests.

Renault India has launched the Kwid Climber at a starting price of Rs 4.3 (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the 1.0 MT and Rs 4.6 lakh for 1.0 AMT variant. This makes the Kwid Climber Rs 25,000 costlier than their respective regular variants. Exterior Highlights Interior Highlights Kwid Climber Features The Climber variants are powered by the 1.0-litre SCe three-cylinder petrol engine that develops 68 PS at 5,500 rpm and 91 Nm of torque at 4,250 rpm. What are your thoughts on the same? Is it worth the premium?
