This is a motorsport event, so the usual caveats of risk apply. Helmets are mandatory. Racing gloves, suits are optional. You can bring your own helmet if you want, else it will be provided at the venue. The format: This is a time-trial event. You will have 5 laps of the track to qualify. The fastest lap time will be noted and kept on the leaderboard. The top-10 qualifiers of the day will get to have another 5 laps, from which the top FIVE will be taken and a final session held with the top FIVE, from which the first and second place winners will be chosen. The Karts: The Go-Karts at Velocity are KnK Trailblazer Off-road Karts. The TrailBlazer Kart is powered by a Honda GX200 single cylinder engine that puts out 7PS of power with a chain drive. It has adjustable pedals, a roll bar, 100 mm of ground clearance and 15x6.6 knobby tyres for dirt tracks. These Karts are quite fast and usually the throttle output is limited for tight tracks. But hey, we're going to open them up for you to have some fun - fun going sideways! The track is a tight one, with corners that make it mandatory to drift through if you want to turn. Else you will end up in the tyre wall!

The event runs from 9 am to 12 pm. Participation fee is Rs. 1500 (includes Rs. 1000 for track and Rs. 500 for breakfast). Non-participants - Rs. 500. Batches of 5 will go out on the track. The top 10 fastest laps of the day will get to go head to head for another session, after which the top 3 winners will be decided.
Here is the layout of the track. It is about 350-360 metres long, but with pretty sharp corners.
There will be up to five Karts running at a time on the track. All the laps will be timed laps. The 200cc, Honda-powered KnK Trailblazer karts put out 7PS of power. One can drive almost flat out on this mud track, with turns 3, 4, 5 requiring moderate drifts. Turns 9 and 10 are great to power slide into and out of. Turn 11 is a tricky one (at least for me). It requires a fast drift as the turn is pretty tight, and just turning the kart doesn't ensure a proper turn. So ready for some action this Saturday? Helmets will be provided, but if you want you can bring your own helmets. There will be registration and a safety briefing before the start of the event at 9am.
Just a reminder. We meet at 8.45 am tomorrow at Westin Sohna, so we can finish with the registration formalities early. There are some interesting prizes to be won for the top 3 winners tomorrow. Prizes are being sponsored by 3M Car Care India, MG Road, SultanPur, you will get 3M goodies and gift certificates. You will also get ZigWheels.com merchandize that includes branded T-shirts, bottles and multi-utility keychains. And that's not all, you also will get some stuff from Den of the Driver.
Thank you for making ZigDrive 8 such a memorable event. We had 37 entries and a few more spectators. I will be sharing photos and videos in this thread from the event. Others also please share your photos and videos. Also please do give feedback on the event, we would love to improve on it and try and make such events a regular affair.
Kaiserketkar oh yes. We had a really good time drifting those karts. The track was also super technical. Speedzilla and I even managed to climb a tree with the karts somehow. Yet to go through all the pictures. Will post them soon.
It was one of the better spent Saturdays. Managed to get mud and sand everywhere, but totally worth it. I had never driven a kart on loose surface before and man, it is kinda tricky. I managed to go into the tire walls on turn 3, twice! On the out lap and the next. After I was given a last warning by Rohit along with some much needed tips, I finally got the hang of it. Navneet Kumar's great photography skills managed to capture some really good pictures as well. Heres one with me getting some gyan from Rohit.
Here are some of the unedited pictures from ZigDrive 8, possibly the best one we've had till date. Members flowed in from all corners of Delhi-NCR to have a spot of fun in these amazing karts built by KNK Karts in Karnataka. These carts wore knobby tyres to take on the dirt and what fun we had drifting these little four-stroke machines. The day started off with a briefing by Rohit Khanna who races Formula LGBs and is associated with JK Tyre Motorsport too. He briefed us on the track layout and also told us what each flag meant. Rohit said that the track's surface changes after every lap and that it was very important for us to find the grippier part of the track if we wanted to set some fast laps. Briefing done, we told to gear up and wait for our turns. The participants went five at a time trying to set the fastest time. The top 10 fastest times would go on to earn a spot in the finals. Zeus4x4 was part of the batch that went out on the track. This session was filled with so many people crashing into the tyre barrier as they were getting used to the layout and the track surface.
Participants were saying that the karts were understeering when they let go of the throttle mid-corner. Here's a picture of one of the first crashes that happened.
Although the participants who had turned up consisted of karting champions, rally drivers and guys who go for regular track days, everybody agreed that the karts were fast enough for the condition and had a blast wringing the life out of them.
These karts are the Trailblazer created by KNK Karts. They feature a Honda GSX200 engine with the fuel tank mounted on the engine. A ground clearance of 100mm ensured that the karts didn't bog down on loose mud. The karts came with knobby 15x6 6-inch tyres which provided ample grip. What's more - all the karts had functional seatbelts! Steering the karts were a tricky affair as you had to feel the kart gripping the surface and then turn. Turning the kart before you find grip will only make it understeer and crash into the tyre wall. The 'A' pedal had enough travel to modulate throttle input. Some of the corners required one to turn real hard coupled with some serious opposite lock.
After the first three sessions were done, all the participants took a break to have breakfast while the crew worked hard to level out the surface again. The roller was strapped on to the Corolla which was driven around the track by Rohit.
The other crew members started covering up the ruts by then.
Here's our very own Stig Mr CorsaVeloce who is also a former national karting champion and Polo Cup racer going off the track at Turn 3. He went off one more time after this and was given a warning by Rohit. Luckily, the others in his session too were having a tough time with their karts and the whole session was restarted. He managed to qualify for the finals and made sure at least one of the moderators were there in the final. Later, Roshun too managed to squeeze into the top 10 and qualify while I did a lap 20 second slower to him and managed to finish 13th and not qualify for the finals. Boo hoo
Speedzilla and CorsaVeloce fighting out for glory. The latter managed to set the fastest time in qualifying (2min 08 seconds)! It was so much fun seeing Karan attack the track with everything he had. He was going sideways in almost every corner. Later, when I took my place on the grid, these two came rushing to me and told me what lines to take and what to avoid. Such nice chaps these two are.
Mario Kart anyone?
These are just few of the pictures from the event. Will upload more once I've gone through them and pick out the best shots. Cheers!
The KnK Trailblazer karts are pretty quick, especially since Rohit had opened up the throttles since there were professionals in the fray. Look at Speedzilla go in the video below. This was his first qualifying run. Gives you a feel of the speed these karts can carry and how you need to drift into the corners. [youtube_video]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqiYckbFss0[/youtube_video]
It was my first time karting (basically driving with four wheels, fast) and boy what an amazing experience! The track was fairly easy. Sure, as a first timer, I did ram the tyre barriers a couple of times, but I think I could've posted better timing if I had another go. Lessons learnt and looking forward to the next Zigdrive! Great shots NikilSJ and Navneet Kumar !!
And here is some brilliant slow-motion video edits done by MotuSid from ZigDrive 8. It just captures some of the drifting action on the track: [youtube_video]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUVFaWg0gFo[/youtube_video]
Here is CorsaVeloce 's (Vidit Jain) qualifying lap after the tyre smacking incident. Three clean laps here, which got him into the top 10 and eventually a podium finish at No. 2. [youtube_video]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G97L2nqNmmY[/youtube_video]
But before he could put in those clean laps and qualify as shown above, this is what CorsaVeloce did on his first time out on the track. Made friends with the tyre wall and kissed Amandeep. :-) [youtube_video]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBL7dHQ6bns[/youtube_video]
Here is a quick highlight reel from the day. Captured some of the action and the prize distribution at ZigDrive 8 Off-Road Go-Kart Drift Attack. [youtube_video]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVt20Zk_RoQ[/youtube_video] The Winners: Parishrut Jhina: 1st Vidit Jain: 2nd Dhiraj Khanna: 3rd
