Expert's Opinion on Gold Star
- Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA) made a comeback to India with the Gold Star 650
- The retro roadster is powered by a 652cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, engine, which makes it a very unique bike in the Indian two-wheeler market
- And the bike’s retro aesthetics with the round LED headlight, rounded tank design and the chrome treatment make it a standout on the road
- The round headlamp, teardrop-shaped fuel tank, chrome elements and the twin-pod cluster give a proper retro appeal
- The retro bike looks quite muscular and has a good road presence
- Build quality and fit and finish levels feels very premium
- The BSA badges on the engine case and side panel are stickers, and feel cheap up close
- The 652cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine provides smooth acceleration
- Has good mid-range grunt post the 3500rpm mark
- The roadster accelerated from 0-100kmph in 6.44 seconds, which is decent for a retro roadster
- Slight vibrations can be felt around 110kmph
- Motor is not very tractable in city traffic conditions
- Heavy clutch action but gearshifts are very slick
- Despite the 201kg kerb weight, the bike feels quite light when on the move
- It takes a bit of effort to tip the bike into corners
- Feedback from the brakes is quite sharp; maybe a bit too sharp for this bike
- Using both the front and rear brakes at the same time could improve the braking experience
- The Pirelli Phantom Sportscomp tyres offer decent grip on dry surfaces but don’t offer much confidence in the wet
- The soft suspension setup allows the bike to tackle bad road conditions very well
- The ride quality is very plush in the city
- Due to the quick rebound at the rear, the bike feels bouncy at high speeds over undulated roads
- The flat and well-padded seat is pretty comfortable
- The upright riding position leads to a comfortable riding experience on the highway as well as in the city
- The 780mm seat height makes the bike accessible for riders of all heights
- Gets two USB charging ports (both Type A and Type C) along with a 12 Volt socket; pretty convenient on an everyday basis
- The visibility of the digital insets in the twin-pod instrument console is not that great, especially when it is sunny
- The BSA Gold Star has a pretty unique positioning in the Indian two-wheeler market as a 652cc, single-cylinder engine. The retro roadster is pretty likeable with its potent engine, classy retro styling and overall good build quality. For someone looking for a 650cc, single-cylinder retro roadster, then the Gold Star is a good choice.
