A unique camp and workshop aimed at road safety and self defence training for women was launched by Honda Motorcycles and Scooters (HMSI) in collaboration with the Delhi police. The workshops and training camps taking place from May 14-22, 2013 will be held across three venues in Delhi which are the Kirpal Bagh Ashram in Model Town, the training hall at Special Police Unit for Women and Children in Nanak Pura, and at the Sports Complex in Jamia Milia University.

Registrations for the workshop and training camp at the fourth venue which is the Sneh International School in Rajdhani Enclave near Karkari Mor start on May 17, 2013. The camp at this venue will be held from May 22 to June 5, 2013. The Road Safety workshop will aim at educating first time female riders on correct two-wheeler riding techniques, safety measures to be taken by existing two-wheeler riders such as mounting dismounting tips, basic riding posture and traffic safety.

Additionally Honda is also offering an opportunity of a free training camp for women who want to learn how to ride a two-wheeler, which will be held across various Traffic Parks in Delhi. A company like Honda has been associated with road safety initiatives all across the globe, and being a leading two-wheeler company they have contributed towards taking measures to help empower women in Delhi where safety for women has become a concern lately.

Ferrari. The name itself imbibes a plethora of emotions and the need to be associated with the brand is second to none. After all, Ferrari is the world's most powerful brand, beating the likes of Apple, Samsung, Coca Cola, and PWC. Such is the power of this brand that every minute around 95 items featuring the prancing horse logo is sold across the globe. The company has garnered over 11,425,014 facebook fans, has 32,193,116 visitors on their website and has recorded over 30,478,586 hits on YouTube. With the numbers set to grow over the coming years, the company is very clear on the fact that their strength lies in their workforce, exclusivity as well as their undeterred dedication to the world of motorsport and technology. Highlighting this fact, Luca di Montezemolo, Chairman, Ferrari, stated, "I base my plans for Ferrari on four key areas; our team spirit, our passion, our extreme technology and our exclusivity."

Based on these merits, the company is chartering a bold path ahead to ensure brand sustenance as well as capitalize on the fact that Ferrari indeed is a very special company.

Passion: Driving Brand Ferrari

By garnering the title of being the World's most powerful brand, Ferrari has obviously gained a tremendous opportunity to generate revenue. The study by Brand Finance revealed that over 55 per cent of Ferrari fans on facebook are under the age of 24 and that the brand has a very high level of recognition across the globe ranging from very young minds to older connoisseurs which points to the fact that the brand isn't just sought after by Ferrari owners but by a vast population who in some way wish to be associated with the prancing horse There is a strong commitment that people make to the brand thanks to its heritage in creating some of the most sought after road going products as well as the company's motorsport history.

For Ferrari, all this admiration and adulations can only spell good news and the company intends on capitalizing on this through every measure. With over 60 global partnerships including Shell, Lego, Puma, a number of video games, model car manufacturers and apparel manufacturers, the company intends on reaching out to capitalize on their brand worth.

Further to that, Ferrari has outlined their retail project to expand as well and has targeted at having 50 Ferrari Stores globally to market their merchandise ranging from kids wear and toys to collectors items and fashion suitable to those who either own a Ferrari or wish to be associated with that level of lifestyle. Not limiting themselves to geographic locations only, the company also offers their merchandise through their online retail venture which has witnessed a steady growth over the years; starting with just a sale of 55,000 units in 2010, the online retail venture has sold over 100,000 items in 2012 and the figure is set to dramatically rise in 2013.

India is a small car market, right? Well, actually not any more. In the past one year, the entry level A-segment - which has models like the Maruti Alto and Hyundai Eon - and the bread and butter B segment - with models like the Hyundai i10, Maruti Wagon R and Chevrolet Beat and Spark - have shown a sharp degrowth as customer preference moved up the value chain. The new growth sweet spots are the premium hatchbacks - Suzuki Swift and Ritz, Hyundai i20 - or the compact sedans like the Honda Amaze, Swift DZire and Chevrolet Sail.

Said Vikas Jain, director-sales, GM India: "The A and B1 segment sales are shrinking with more people migrating to bigger cars. The massive discounts in the small car segment should tell you the extent of suffering of manufacturers of these cars."

Currently, the discounts in the A and B1 segments range anywhere between Rs 20,000 to a lakh depending upon model and make. Industry experts say the trend is driven by a new class of first time car buyers who are joining the pool at a higher price level. Said Sumit Bali, executive vice president, Kotak Mahindra Bank: "The entry level A-segment has been soft all through last year and of late first time buyers are going straight to entry level sedans. So the A and B segments continue to be soft. The second half of this fiscal should be slightly better in terms of demand and sentiment."

Car marketers say the shift could reverse as petrol makes a come back vis-a-vis diesel. Said Maruti COO marketing and sales Mayank Pareek: "This trend has more to do with availability of diesel versions in a year that saw a rapid drive towards diesel cars. In the A2 + segment, for instance, we have Swift and Ritz in diesel version so that segment showed growth. With petrol prices becoming more supportive of late, the entry level segment has just about started looking up and diesel models are now under pressure. So there's just a hint of an improvement in Alto and WagonR now as they move into the plus zone," he explained.

Marketers say the bigger picture of decline though does not seem to have corrected itself and April was the fifth month in a row that saw a decline in car sales. "Earlier SUVs and diesels were growing but that too is getting neutralized," said Pareek. "Last month, SUVs grew 4%, this month it is lower." The only silver lining is rural growth. "We have clocked a 17% upside on rural sales last month," he said, adding, "the market should pick up in the second half of this year helping us close with 5-7% growth if we're lucky."

Auto experts also say that overall the higher priced models have fared much better in the slowdown with the super premium segment clocking decent double digit growth last year as well. Said Ashok Khanna, senior executive VP and business head-auto loans, HDFC Bank: "The segment that has proved to be quite slowdown resistant is the premium car market in the Rs 20 lakh plus category currently dominated by six brands - Mercedes Benz, BMW, Audi, Porsche, Volvo and Jaguar-Land Rover. That's why this segment is seeing compact launches including the impending A Class launch."

While syncing your phone through Bluetooth with your car stereo system is slowly becoming the norm, the majority of systems installed in cars don't offer this feature. To answer that predicament, Jabra has introduced the Jabra TOUR in car speaker that effortlessly syncs with your phone via Bluetooth and allows you an array of features. It's convenient, easy to use, however at Rs 6490/- it is a little pricey.

The Jabra TOUR is essentially a 3 watt speaker that offers great voice quality and comes with a HD voice microphone to optimize the sound and speech quality. The speaker can also be used to playback music, podcasts and directions from GPS systems, however the sound quality while playing music isn't up to the mark as the speaker doesn't offer much bass; after all its primary purpose is voice clarity.

The speaker can connect up to two users simultaneously, which is a decent feature for families as you don't have to keep syncing your phone with the speaker. Weighing just 135 grams, it has an inbuilt battery that allows up to 20 hours of talk-time and 45 days of standby time. Charging the unit is easy thanks to the universal car charger that fits into the car lighter socket. It also comes with a micro-USB cable that allows you to charge the device through your laptop or PC in the convenience of your office or home.

With more and more manufacturers offering similar systems inbuilt in their vehicles via the in car entertainment unit, the Jabra TOUR does have stiff competition. Having said that though, it does have its merits of being a convenient and easy to use instrument. Our only major grouse with the system however is its pricing which we feel is too high for such a speaker.

Designed as a program to allow customers and prospective customers experience and understand the capabilities of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the StarDrive program essentially works as an experiential marketing program for the brand. The program itself is divided into three categories, namely the active safety demonstration, the SUV demonstration and the final slalom test.

The safety demonstration allows the participant experience the active and passive systems on board in the event of critical road conditions or the possibility of an accident. Systems such as ABS and EBD obviously come to the fore, but it is the little things such as the sunroof and windows closing to keep the passengers cocooned in the case of an accident that really show the technological prowess of Mercedes-Benz.

The SUV drive is a mixed bag of emotions, because the demonstration showcases the sheer capabilities that these mean machines possess. The SUVs are capable of navigating 30 degree inclines, climbing over rather undulated surfaces and climb up a slope at a 45 degree angle. Along with that, the participant also gets to experience the hill-hold function as well as the hill-descend function. While this is great, the reason it gets depressing is that most owners of such an SUV will never take it anywhere near areas where these functions will come in handy, save for hill-hold which would help soccer moms from inadvertently reversing while waiting on a mall ramp to exit Regardless, the capabilities of these machines is amazing and they pack a serious amount of equipment to ensure that they can perform on surfaces and gradients that pose a serious challenge.

The final demonstration is the only one where the participant is allowed to drive the car. The handling course is a display of the vehicle's handling ability and as the participant makes their way through the track laid out with cones they get a sense of the ease of maneuvering the vehicle despite its length and weight.

Overall, the StarDrive Experience is an entertaining way to push the brand and share its virtues with prospective and existing customers. Mercedes-Benz is expecting over 8000 participants this year which is a solid improvement from the 2400 that took part in the first year. Conducted in association with Mobil 1 and Daimler Financial Services the StarDrive program travels from city to city throughout the year and is a worthy event to attend if you are considering the purchase of a three point star.

Mahindra has on and off been dropping subtle clues about its upcoming sub-4-metre offering, Vibe. Today, it finally announced that the Vibe is all set to hit the tarmac on June 5, 2013, in Mumbai. Related:

Details of the new car have been under a tight lid so far leading to speculations about what the Vibe really is. Earlier rumours suggested that it's a compact sedan based on the Verito meant to take on the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire and the recently launched Honda Amaze. However, spy photos of the Vibe posted online have clearly established the car to be a hatchback.

While the Verito Vibe looks exactly the same as its sedan sibling when seen head on, the rear is where things takes a steep, rakish fall with the boot chopped off entirely and taillights mounted on to the C-Pillar. The styling does hark back to the 90s; whether that's a good thing or bad, we'll leave you to decide. On the plus side of things, the Verito is known for its spacious interior and the Vibe will likely carry forward that trait.

The engine will be the same 1.5-litre, 65PS dCi diesel unit that does duty on the Verito. And with the length kept well under 4 metres, pricing should be extremely competitive.

Commenting on the 'Verito Vibe', Pravin Shah, Chief Executive, Automotive Division, Mahindra andamp; Mahindra, said, "The Verito Vibe marks our entry into the high volume sub-4 metre segment. We are confident that this product will be successful in delighting our customers with its young and sporty looks, without compromising the benefits that our existing Verito has to offer.''

To pay homage to the man himself, the museum also houses the exact replica of Enzo Ferrari's office. Such is the nature of this museum that it is almost 'shrine-like' in its appeal and aura. You can almost feel the energy that goes behind this brand within these walls and sure enough, Ferrari does share a relevant amount of 'behind the scenes' action through the display of some of their concept vehicles, including an elaborate display of the concepts and stages of development of their latest offering, the LaFerrari.

Originally going by the name Ferrari F150, the museum showcases different elements of the developmental stages of what we now know as the LaFerrari, a masterpiece of engineering, form, function, performance and technology. On display is the 2010 Ferrari Multiposto F150 M8 Hy-Kers V12 as well as the 2010 Ferrari 599 Hy-Kers V12. While these were test beds for the Hy-Kers system that eventually debuted in the LaFerrari, it gives you an insight as to when the company actually got working on the hybrid system. In terms of design the exhibition had on display the 2011 Ferrari F 150 Modello di stiles known as the "Manta" as well as the "Tensostruttura". The LaFerrari is a design evolution based upon these two concepts and unlike the customary norm where the final model is usually a little toned down as compared to the concepts, with the LaFerrari the story is entirely the opposite

Located in the heartland of Ferrari, the Museo Ferrari is the Mecca for those who are infatuated by the prancing horse brand. You just can't get enough of Ferrari, but if you want to soak in a whole lot of Ferrari history and bathe in the aura of a very special brand a visit to the museum is definitely worth adding to your bucket list regardless of whether you are a motorsport fan, classic car expert or just a regular bloke bitten real hard by the color red

Honda has finally confirmed a comeback into F1 from 2015 onwards, putting to rest endless rumours about the marque's return to Formula 1 following the change in engine regulations from the current 2.4-litre V8 to the 1.6-litre V6 turbo engines. To add to the excitement, Honda has also declared that it has signed a multi-year deal with old-time partners McLaren which commences from 2015. The deal will take effect one season after the new regulations kick in as the Woking-based team has a year to run on its existing agreement with Mercedes.

"Together, we're about to embark on a new and extremely exciting chapter in McLaren's history. Like McLaren, Honda is a company with motor racing woven into the fabric of its heritage. We're proud and thrilled to be joining forces once more to take on the world in Formula One," said McLaren's Team Principal and Group CEO Martin Whitmarsh.

McLaren cars will then be powered by Honda engines and energy recovery systems renewing an old partnership between the two companies that won four drivers' and four constructors' championships between 1988 and 1992. This renewal once again brings to life the most renowned association in F1 history that brought greats like Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost their championship titles in the late 1980s. Further, it also hints at a re-emergence of Honda turbo power in retrospect of the days when it took technology to unimaginable levels of output.

The Japanese marque has been away from the sport since the end of the 2008 season when it last participated as BAR-Honda with Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello at the wheel. Ironically, immediately after the company withdrew as an engine supplier and constructor, selling the team to Ross Brawn, the new team went on to win both the titles that year under the Brawn GP.

"Ever since its establishment, Honda has been a company which grows by taking on challenges in racing. Honda has a long history of advancing our technologies and nurturing our people by participating in the world's most prestigious automobile racing series. The new F1 regulations with their significant environmental focus will inspire even greater development of our own advanced technologies and this is central to our participation in F1," said Takanobu Ito, President and CEO of Honda Motor Co., Ltd.

While Honda has already started developing the new engine, it is unlikely for it to provide the engine only to McLaren as it does not make sound business sense. More importantly, with just three engine suppliers confirmed as per the new regulations (Renault, Ferrari and Mercedes; and now Honda), back marker team Marussia might find itself in need of an engine, keeping in mind that its current engine supplier Cosworth has not confirmed its attendance in the sport as per the new regulations.

While the deal between McLaren and Honda brings exciting times along with memories of a thrilling era in Formula 1, it will mark the end of the relationship between McLaren and Mercedes after two decades.

Shell may very well be the only international company to be granted approval by Government of India to retail fuel in India. However, to tap the full market potential and distinguish itself as a mass market oil supplier in India, Shell has to appeal to the average customer as well and not just to its high performance fuel clientele.

For this purpose, the company has launched its 'Shell Fuel Economy Refresh' campaign that seeks to reinforce its commitment to fuel economy. At the heart of this campaign is the commitment of Shell Fuel Economy Formula which is designed to prevent the build-up of deposits that can harm an engine's performance over time.

Shell's claims in the campaign state that its fuel is formulated with a combination of additives that are designed to maintain engine performance by keeping injectors clean, protecting valuable engine parts against corrosion and keeping engine fuel systems clean.

However, if you were to analyse the matter, it would be extremely difficult to judge this claim about its fuel and would require rigorous and long testing to determine if the benefits are applicable in the real world.

There are 5 fuel saving tips that Shell is promoting in its Shell Fuel Economy Refresh campaign:

andbull; Drive Smoothly andndash; Avoid rapid acceleration and frequent braking

andbull; Drive in a higher gear andndash; Changing up to a higher gear as early as possible keeps the engine spinning at a lower RPM thereby consuming less fuel

andbull; Reduce speed andndash; Avoid driving faster than 110 km/h

andbull; Avoid Excessive Idling andndash; Switch the engine off after 10 seconds or less idling

andbull; Avoid Over-Revving andndash; Avoid over-revving the engine when changing gears

These points will undoubtedly reflect in a change in the average fuel consumption of any automobile, and with driver practice they will be significant enough to be realised.

To promote its campaign, Shell Retail has kicked off a comprehensive awareness and consumer engagement drive across all Shell fuel pumps. The company is initiating a campaign on radio and outdoor media to encourage vehicle owners to experience the benefits of Shell Fuel Economy across its product range and educate motorists about responsible driving behaviours.

"Shell is one of the first companies to make fuel economy claims on maingrade fuels. We have more than 100 years' experience in helping the world's drivers get more out of their fuel. The Shell Fuel Economy Refresh campaign goes that extra mile in demonstrating that through the use of these fuels and making a few simple changes to your driving habits, you achieve fuel economy." said Ravi Sundararajan, Director andamp; General Manager, Shell Retail India.

The board of Maruti Suzuki, India's largest passenger carmaker, has just cleared a proposal to start manufacturing light commercial vehicles (LCV). Senior Maruti Suzuki executives communicated this decision at an offsite with its vendors in Malaysia last week. A new LCV codenamed Y9T is already under development and will compete head-on with the Tata Ace. It will be powered by a new 2-cylinder 800cc diesel engine, now in advanced stages of development. People close to the development said Maruti Suzuki's first LCV will roll out of its Gujarat plant, which goes on stream in FY16.

The new LCV is being developed ground up at the India research and development centre, a sign of the Japanese parent's growing confidence in the Indian subsidiary's Randamp;D capabilities. Maruti Suzuki's new Randamp;D facility in Rohtak is expected to go live next year. Suzuki has been progressively moving chunks of design and development for local models to India, starting with giving responsibility to the Indian Randamp;D to come out with refreshes and facelifts.

However what could be a major change in tack is the company's consideration of having its own family of diesel engines, it so far relied on Italian car maker Fiat's multijet diesel engine, which powers hatchbacks, sedans and multi-purpose vehicle Ertiga. Four people close to the development told ET that the two-cylinder 800cc engine, a naturally aspirated variant for LCV and turbocharged variant for small cars are at an advanced stage of development. The company is also strongly considering extending the family of diesel engines to the 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine and 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine.

The new family of diesel engines, if given a go-ahead by the management, is expected to complement Fiat's 1.3-litre multijet, say people close to the development. With Hyundai's new compact diesel offering hitting the market, Maruti Suzuki too should be looking in that direction, reasoned Deepesh Rathore, India MD for IHS Automotive.

"I think Maruti would definitely need to look beyond Fiat for the diesel engines. The Royalty that it pays to Fiat is significant, as volumes go up it becomes more expensive, so it makes sense for Maruti Suzuki to look at their own diesel engine family," added Rathore. A senior executive who did not want to be named said, "Bigger engines also cannot be ruled out, but there is nothing crystallised at the moment." Responding to ET's email query, a Maruti Suzuki spokesperson said, "As a policy, we do not comment on future plans and products."

The new LCV follows the success of the Tata Motors Ace, which now sells 2 lakh units every year. Mahindra andamp; Mahindra's Maxximo is another competitor in this segment. Experts say both these segments open up new avenues of growth for Maruti Suzuki. The 0.75-1 tonne pickup truck is one of the fastest growing minitruck segments in the country, growing at a compounded annual growth rate of over 15-20per cent in the last five years. According to Frost andamp; Sullivan, the small and light commercial vehicle space is expected to almost double to 8 lakh units by 2015-16, with small commercial vehicles making up for 70per cent of the total LCVs sold in India. "The company told vendors that its strong brand and network will help in achieving a healthy market share in the growing LCV space," revealed one of the vendors present at the annual meet.

Even though the diesel segment has slowed down a bit after explosive growth earlier, many feel there is still untapped growth at the entrylevel segment. Tata Motors is developing the 800cc diesel Nano and Hyundai India will be launching the new hatchback BA with a 1.1-litre diesel engine. Maruti Suzuki had lost some market share for diesel cars in the last couple of years, hampered by capacity constraints. The carmaker has since announced an investment of Rs 1,700 crore in a new diesel engine plant in Gurgaon with a capacity of 3,00,000 units. The company also tied up with Fiat to source 1,00,000 units from the latter's Ranjangaon plant in Maharashtra.

For FY14, Maruti Suzuki is gearing up for sale of 4.65 lakh diesel cars and 7.5 lakh petrol cars, according to people in the know. The company hopes to increase its market share to 40 per cent in the next three years when the car market is likely to hit annual volumes of 4 million units, the company told vendors at the recent meet in Malaysia. Despite the tough market environment, Maruti Suzuki is aiming at a 10 per cent growth in FY-14, Having regained almost two hundred basis points market share in FY-13, the company is aiming to take it up to 40 per cent and hold on to it in the next three years, when market is expected to touch 4 million, the company informed vendors at the recent meet in Malaysia.

To that effect Maruti Suzuki will continue to launch two to three new offerings including one all new model or significant facelift every year. For FY-14, it will launching a new small car 'YL7' to replace 'A Star' and 'Zen Estilo,' which will eventually get a 800 cc diesel engine in FY-15. The company is also contemplating introducing Sx4 cross over or station wagon - YAD and XA Alpha SUV compact SUV.

The new one is no different and proves to the world yet again, why its regarded as the best car in the world.

It can get quite difficult to find a place to begin when you are talking about the all new S-Class. That's because, this full sized luxury is packed with bristling technology of which many are world firsts. Air-balance, Intelligent Drive, LED headlights and then some and that's barely scratching the surface. The 2014 S-Class brings us one step closer to automated driving. The flagship S-Class limousine can see potholes and bumps in the road and adapt suspension to brace itself ahead of the impending impact in a bid to reduce the potential damage and discomfort. Mercedes-Benz says it is the first car in the world to have suspension 'with eyes' as part of its revolutionary system called 'road surface scan' using a stereo camera.

It knows when cars are approaching too quickly in adjacent lanes and can warn the driver. It knows when a rear-end collision is imminent and can hit the brakes and activate hazard lights to mitigate injury. It can steer out of danger if the driver is too drowsy to stay in the lane. Much of the technology is standard, and although it seems out of reach for the masses now, it will trickle down to every vehicle, eventually. The firm boasts it is the 'most advanced S-Class ever created', with the driver even able to choose any perfume he or she wishes circulating around the cabin via an atomiser in the air conditioning system. And it is also the first car in the world to dispense completely with light-bulbs andndash; replacing all lights with LED systems.

And then you have the interiors, which simply take your breath away. The perfectly coordinated use of materials and colours produces an exclusive interior seemingly cast from a single mould. There is generous use of wood trim, especially in the dashboard and centre console. Two high-resolution TFT colour displays in 8:3 format with a 12.3 inch screen form the new information centre in the S-Class. Voice entry using Linguatronic via the Speech Dialog System allows voice commands in one go.

The Air-Balance is the other technology that has been spoken about a lot. As a world first, the new S-Class Saloon has an active perfuming system as part of the Air-Balance package. Active means that the perfuming system is switched on and off manually, with manual adjustment of the intensity. The interior smell is not changed permanently, nor are the perfume molecules deposited on fabric surfaces or clothing. The fragrance is discreet and mild, and dissipates rapidly.

There will be a range of power petrol and diesel as well as hybrid powerplants available which will not only be more powerful than the outgoing engines but more frugal as well. With almost no weight gain, Mercedes has been able to focus well on driving dynamics as well.

The new S-Class design however has been drawing mixed reviews with some loving the restrained looks while others bemoaning the ornate LED headlights and front grille that is twice as large as before.

Whatever camp people choose as far as looks go, there is no arguing that the 2014 Mercedes S-Class is innovative. And that is what the S-Class always has been. Still the best car in the world then? You bet

__ __

The trend of 'familial design' which seems to have taken most of the German car makers by storm over the last few years is a worrying one. I mean, the Passat is just a bigger Jetta and the BMW 5 Series is just a slightly burlier 3 Series.

And if any company is taking this too seriously, it's Audi, with all its SUV and sedan offerings looking pretty much like the same car in different sizes. Thankfully, there are a few gems that do crop up from the usual fare which really make us smile and a couple of years back Audi had us grinning silly with the delectable lines of the A7 Sportback. So when a newer, sportier version of that car came out, naturally we were jumping through hoops to get our hands on it.

There was nothing really wrong with the A7 to begin with. It's a car that does design, luxury and premium feel in good measure, but the one place where it does leave you pining for more is outright performance.

Of course, it's not like the 245PS, 500Nm V6 diesel available in India, or the 310PS V6 petrol that's available everywhere else feel slow or anything, but it's just that one gets the feeling that a gorgeous four-door coupe such as this needs something more to compete with the CLS' and the Panameras of the world.

So now we have the S7, Audi's beefed up Sportback, launched in Europe last year and possibly coming to India sometime in the near future. Now of course, this is not to be confused with the RS7 that Audi unveiled in early 2013 at the Detroit Motor Show. The S7 is more of a 'regular hammer' take on the A7 as opposed to the RS7's sledge hammer approach.

Visually, it's pretty much a case of 'spot the differences' between the standard A7 and this sporty S7. The long hood, the long wheelbase with short overhangs and that swooping roofline which flows into the automatically extending (or manually if you so wish) rear spoiler at the very tail end of the body is all maintained.

:

But do a double take and the fact that this car carries sportier genes starts coming through. The single-frame grille now sports the S7 badge with its red accent, like Cindy Crawford's mole andndash; a solitary detail suddenly adding character to an otherwise familiar face. Both the bumpers along with the rear diffuser have received a bit of a rework as well, and those twin double barrel exhaust pipes will positively leave you swooning.

The door sills too get S7 badging for a bit of added andeacute;lan. And if the massive 19-inch five spoke wheels weren't a dead giveaway in the first place, then the V8 T badges on the front quarter panels will leave no doubt in anyone's mind as to exactly what level of firepower you are packing under the hood.

On the inside, you'll be greeted by a very familiar A7 interior which too has been tweaked every so slightly in light of the need to add sportiness to justify the S badge.

There is a smattering of S badges all around the cockpit, a red ring on the start-stop button while the 7-speed S tronic dual clutch gearbox gets an aluminium strip on the aircraft throttle style gear selector lever and aluminium paddles behind the steering wheel. The pedals are made of stainless steel, and the soft keys of the MMI operating system are finished in faux aluminium.

Audi equips the S7 Sportback with single piece 'S' sport seats with power lumbar supports as standard and embossed S logos on the backrests. But those who do understand that they're bodies are nowhere as fit as real race car drivers can always choose for the comfort seats or regular seats as options.

After facing immense criticism post the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix for their quick degrading tyres, Pirelli has now officially released a statement saying they'll be changing the tyre compounds in time for the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. Post the Spanish Grand Prix Pirelli Motorsport Director Paul Hembery said that they will try making changes to reduce the number of pit-stops prior to the British Grand Prix. But according to a recent announcement they have now decided to fast-track the process and bring the new compounds in time for the race in Canada.

"Our aim is to provide the teams with a new range which mixes the stability of the 2012 tyres and the performance of the current ones," Hembery said. "After evaluating data from the first few races this year, we've decided to introduce a further evolution as it became clear at the Spanish Grand Prix that the number of pit stops was too high," he added.

The 2013 Pirellis were criticised for their rapid degradation, their performance focused nature, overheating of the rear tyres and the tyre delaminations. Tyre delamination is basically a process where the tyre comes apart due to extreme stresses (temperature, lack of pressure or deflation) in racing conditions as suffered by Paul di Resta and Max Chilton in the Free Practice of the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix. There were many such delaminations also noticed in Bahrain, but the issue has been under fire after the current race.

According to Hembery the delaminations were caused due to damage from debris that overheated the tread and that it did not compromise the safety which was being questioned. He explained "It's important to point out that these delaminations, which occur when the tread comes off, do not compromise the safety of the tyres as the core structure of the tyre is not affected in any way, helping drivers to complete the lap and to change the damaged tyres safely."

Pirelli has also had its own share of woes when it comes to testing the compounds where Hembery said "It's worth underlining that the current regulations for winter tests limit the opportunity to test the tyres under the same conditions as the race season because of the lower temperature and restricted time."

Apart from the pre-season testing where the company and teams can test new compounds on the current cars, there is no other way to test the tyres. Currently Pirelli has to test their compounds on a 2010 Renault F1 car which is at least five seconds slower than the current ones.

Therefore the Pirelli boss re-iterated the need for in-season testing, which is also a point most teams are trying to put across. As far as the current 2013 compounds are concerned Hembery said "We developed the 2013 tyres on the basis of careful simulations that were, however, not sufficient, taking into account the improved speed of cars (up to 3 seconds per lap)."

When it comes to a few teams being favoured after the tyres are changed, the finger points towards Red Bull Racing. The only problem the RB9 faces is the tyre degradation, and the team has criticised the tyres since the pre-season tests. Pirelli has been put into a 'Catch-22' situation because changing the tyres also meant that teams like Ferrari and Lotus who had adapted better to the tyres will be affected.

However this tyre debate can get never-ending and fairly technical and hard to decode to an average motorsport or Formula 1 fan but that's how Formula 1 is; complicated business. But it is important to note that from a sport which was getting dominated by the fastest engine or the fastest car has now been transformed into a sport with thrilling action with more overtaking and unexpected winners due to the tyres. As of now one can only wait till the Canadian Grand Prix to know how the new changes will affect the teams, their performance and the pecking order of the championship.

It probably was a nice blend of sheer power and sophistication to begin with. However over the years the GL Class of models from Mercedes-Benz has matured in both departments only to return in 2013 looking all the more imposing and a lot more luxurious to say the least.

Gracing the launch of the new generation all-terrain monstrosity from Mercedes-Benz was our beloved Tennis star Boris Becker, who took the wraps of the exclusive launch edition of the new GL Class, only 100 units of which are on offer to interested buyers.

Not only has Mercedes-Benz managed to increase the output and torque by up to 22% over the previous model, but also reduce the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions on the new GL 350 CDI 4MATIC by 15% as compared to before. Thanks to its third-generation technology, the 3.0 litre V6 diesel engine on the new GL 350 CDI BlueEfficiency 4MATIC produces 258PS and 620Nm of torque. The standard-specification ECO start/stop function automatically ensures that the engine is temporarily switched off when the vehicle is standing at traffic lights or in a jam.

The new GL-Class besides being more powerful and efficient also packs in a heap of newer driver assist and safety technologies like Crosswind Assist, Trailer Stability Assist and Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR) systems among others to bring out the best in vehicle even under harsh driving conditions.

Now available at Mercedes-Benz dealerships pan India, the new generation GL 350 CDI Launch Edition will cost you a hefty Rs 77.5 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). But it certainly looks worth the price tag. Question is whether it fits your bill; literally or any other way you imagine.
