Held for the very first time in 1929 in Cernobbio, northern Italy, one of the world's most prestigious classic car, better known as the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este since 1999 has been taking place annually in the grounds of the Grand Hotel Villa d'Este and Villa Erba under the patronage of the BMW Group.

Like in previous years, this years gathering was something very special and adopted the "90 years of BMW Motorrad" anniversary as its focal point. A special exhibition along the shores of Lake Como featured over 30 leading lights from BMW's history including the company's first motorcycle, the BMW R 32 presented in1923. A special section was dedicated to 60 Years of the Chevrolet Corvette.

This year also marked the third edition of the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este for motorcycles, which reached its climax on the central stage in the grounds of Villa Erba with the presentation of the Trofeo BMW Group. The jury awarded the prize to the IMZ M-35K.

A more befitting atmospheric backdrop could not have been asked for the world premiere of the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupandeacute; and BMW Concept Ninety, which left crowds speechless courtesy their innovative design and scintillating craftsmanship.

Privileged visitors at this tradition-steeped event were left gazing upon an ultra-exclusive line-up of historical cars and motorcycles like the very rare Bugatti 57SC Atlantic from 1938, which was awarded the "best of show" by a select jury.

Powered by a 3.3-liter twincam straight-8 engine producing somewhere between 200 and 210 horsepower, the Atlantic also won the Coppa d'Oro Villa d'Este prize decided by public referendum. The Concept Cars and Prototypes class was headed by the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring.

Commenting on the turnout and overall response this year, Dr. Ralf Rodepeter, Director of the BMW Museum and member of the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este 2013 Selecting Committee said, "The competition entrants and the special exhibitions at this year's event have taken it to a quite extraordinary level. We're therefore delighted that more than 6,000 visitors came along to experience the event on the Sunday alone."

The Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in 2013 brought together 50 cars and 35 motorcycles from widely varying eras in automotive history. In addition, six concept vehicles and prototypes went on show, each representing their own distinctive perspective on forward-thinking automotive design. This link between traditional and future-focused aesthetics in vehicle construction was once again the central theme this year for the world renowned classic car event in Italy.

The late great Mantuan ace better known to the world as Tazio Nuvolari is back in the news thanks to the efforts of a few diehards who have resurrected the very last car he ever raced and brought it back to its original pristine glory. The car in question is this Cisitalia Abarth 204A Spider from 1950 which Nuvolari drove in anger in the Palermo andndash; Monte Pellegrini hill climb of that very year. I do not have the exact details of who scored fastest time of the day and won that event but it is a fact that Nuvolari piloted this very rare Cisitalia to fifth overall and first in class

Nuvolari and Cisitalia plus Abarth are tremendous names in Italian motor racing and while much has been written about Il Montavano Volante (literally The Flying Mantuan), not much is known about the Cisitalia Abarth. This was one of just seven units built, two of them by Piero Dusio's Cisitalia concern before the textile magnate cum Grand Prix race team owner went bankrupt. The entire Cisitalia outfit was then taken over by Carlo Abarth who made another five of these 204A Spiders. What is interesting is that this racer used a slightly breathed on Fiat Type 106 four-cylinder engine displacing 1089cc (cylinder dimensions measuring 68 x 75mm) which featured a single overhead camshaft operating two valves per cylinder. Breathing through twin Weber 36 DR4 SP carbs, this tiny engine with dry sump lubrication, produced 62bhp at the then dizzy engine speed of 5800rpm. Transmission was the standard Fiat 4-speed manual 'box.

While the engine was a proven entity in everyday road use, its fitment in a special lightweight chassis and body was what made it so potent. The frame was made up of twin oval section tubular long members with appropriate cross members to deliver that much needed stiffness. Given that Ferdinand Porsche had designed the ill-fated 16-cylinder 1.5-litre supercharged Cisitalia Grand Prix car (with all-wheel-drive to boot), the front suspension of this 204A Spider did display some remnants of the Porsche influence with the torsion bars and hydraulic shock absorbers up front while the rear suspension encompassed a rigid axle, twin longitudinal leaf springs and hydraulic shock absorbers. The entire car weighed just under 485 kilos and with the relevant final drive ratio depending on the type of circuit it was raced at, it had a top speed of anywhere between 160 to 190km/h.

This particular car was found by Sergio Lugo, the well known Argentine classic car collector and a high ranking FIVA member. Lugo and his team worked to restore the car back to its original glory in a taxing two and a half year spell but when it was revealed to enthusiasts in April this year (at the National Automobile Museum Giovanni Agnelli in Turin) one could make out that the turnout was well worth the effort. Given that of the seven 204A's built, it was thought that only four remained in existence, two apiece in Japan and the US, but Sergio Lugo's persistence to unearth the Nuvolari example now means that the most important of them all has been brought back to life and will now reside in Argentina.

Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este 2013

Just about the time this magazine went into press was held the latest edition of one of the world's greatest classic car events andndash; the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este Held on the historic lawns of the Grand Hotel Villa d'Este on the shores of Lake Como, the event this year had lined up some glorious machinery which has been the hallmark of this legendary concours d'elegance right from the very first such event on the same premises in the early 1930s Since the time it has been restructured in the 1990s, it has now risen to the pinnacle of all such classic car events in the world.

Apart from the glorious automotive rolling sculptures from over a century, the event would also witness a special section dedicated to 60 Years of the Chevrolet Corvette while another would focus on 90 years of BMW Motorrad, both these displays being held on the even larger Villa Erba which adjoins the Villa d'Este. And as is tradition, the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este remains unique in having a special concours for motorcycles andndash; the Concorso di Motociclette (established since 2011) and also a class for the latest prototypes and concepts to showcase future technology. Sure enough we will have a full coverage of the event in our next issue.

Winning the 1985 Benson andamp; Hedges World Championship of Cricket was one of the golden moments of Indian Cricket. Even more so for one Ravi Shastri, whose resounding performance earned him the Champion of Champions title and a life long association with the word 'Audi' in the hearts of millions of cricket fans all over India.

The iconic Audi 100 that Ravi Shastri won for his efforts was recently in the pink city adding further charm to an already special gathering of Vintage andamp; Classic cars. Organized by the Rajasthan Tourism andamp; Rajputana Automotive Sports Car Club along with Audi, the 15th Vintage andamp; Classic Car Rally in Jaipur saw assembly of an entire fleet of pre and post-war cars in all of their regal beauty on the first day of the rally.

On the second day of the rally, the cars were flagged off from Hotel Jai Mahal Palace Lawns. The historical cars drove through the heritage sites in Jaipur leaving behind a trail of nostalgia. Many of these vintage beauties have been featured in movies like Gandhi, Queenie, Zubeida, Bhool Bhulaiya and Veer.

Speaking on the occasion, Michael Perschke, Head, Audi India said, "I am delighted to continue our partnership with the Rajputana Automotive Sports Car Club in Jaipur. Rajasthan, the land of Maharajas has been setting the standards for luxury in India for centuries. It is a matter of great joy to see cars after cars that have chalked down automobile history, and each car has a brilliant and glorious story to tell of its own. We at Audi love to celebrate the history and what better than the iconic Audi 100 of cricket legend Ravi Shastri to be displayed here. This is a car we had restored with Audi Jaipur over the last year."

For the spectators to get a sense of Audi's pioneering automotive advancements from then to now, a lot of new Audi cars were also displayed.

At the recently concluded Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, H.H. Arvind Singh Mewar, the Maharana of Udaipur became the first Indian ever to win an award at the internationally reputed classic car event.

Shriji's 1924 Rolls-Royce 20 HP, Barker Tourer (GLK 21) was one of two cars from India selected by the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance panel to participate in the event, but it was the Rolls-Royce from the House of Mewar that went on to win the Lucius Beebe Trophy on August 19, 2012.

To mark the historic occasion, the House of Mewar also released a 194-page coffee table book dedicated to the history and restoration of this favourite royal car along with the family's association with Rolls-Royce over seven generations.

The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance held in California is an annual celebration of the most beautiful and rare automobiles from around the world. At this year's Concourse, which was the 62nd edition, the award for the coveted 'Best of Show' went to a 1928 Mercedes-Benz 680S Saoutchik Torpedo.

Owned by Paul and Judy Andrews of White Settlement, Texas, the car sports one of seven Torpedo bodies made by Jacques Saoutchik for the Mercedes-Benz 680S chassis, each differing in their details.

"I'm not sure I can put into words how I feel," said Paul Andrews, founder and CEO of TTI. "It's probably the most wonderful feeling I've had in my life. It's the culmination of a lot of hard work by a lot of people. We're all excited. We're tickled to death.

"It's the whole package. There's not a bad line on this car. It was the sports car, the high performance car of its era, and then Saoutchik gave it style and grace. It has power and it has beauty," added Andrews.

"This car really has everything," said Concours Chairman Sandra Button. "It has fantastic German engineering, elegant French styling and a wonderful restoration by Paul Russell. It's a car you can imagine racing as well as touring. It's just a marvellous embodiment of everything that is Mercedes-Benz."

Other nominees for Best of Show included a 1935 Duesenberg J Gurney-Nutting Speedster owned by the William Lyon Family of Newport Beach, California; a 1931 Duesenberg J Derham Tourster owned by Joseph and Margie Cassini III, of West Orange, New Jersey; and a 1933 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport Figoni Coupandeacute; owned by David and Adele Cohen of West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

It would also be worth mentioning that a 1924 Rolls-Royce 20 H.P. from Jodhpur/Udaipur made its proud owner, His Highness Arvind Singhji Mewar, the first Maharaja from India to win an award at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

Ever since it was announced last year that there would be two classes catering to cars of the maharajas at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the at times vibrant, at times faction-riven classic car fraternity in India did pause and while not exactly break into applause, looked as pleased as punch. For a while that is, to think about a time in history when the cars in and of that period meant and continue to mean so much for them all.

However it is not just about Maharaja cars that Pebble Beach is so important because as a single event it celebrates automobiles (and motorcycles since the past few years), old, great, innovative, exciting and racy with a purpose not many can comprehend at first instance If that's not all, the way it is configured, the event is at the pinnacle of showcasing history with the present and the near future also compressed into a sliver of exotic locale on the California coast. No wonder then that not just deep pocketed collectors and enthusiasts rub shoulders with the swish set and the big suits of the car majors make it a point to be in attendance, for indicators, Ratan Tata was at Pebble Beach the year before, trying to hit the right chords with the Jaguar faithful. Presence is everything and it holds true for the schmoozing set as well as the cars, grand and old the better and if with vital provenance, it could be just the proverbial lalique crowning the hood

ZigWheels has made it a virtue of covering the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance without fail for the past four years (we have been featuring the event in our newspaper supplements and web site from 2008 onwards) and while there were some truly great cars for the 62nd running of the event, I would love to talk more about the cars which constituted Class E1 and E2, those which catered to cars once owned and used by Indian royalty. What is a mighty big plus point of Pebble Beach is one should be prepared to be surprised, by the cars you didn't know anything about Cars, which have never been seen for ages, caged in their climate controlled garages, selectively taken out for this one event and then cocooned back into hibernation.

The most important criterion for inclusion at Pebble is that entry is by invitation after a committee has vetted it. If that is not all, however eclectic a car or marque might be, getting them to roll repeatedly on the greens of the 18th fairway of the golf course which plays host to the concours is as rare as Pune getting snowed under And here is where Manvendra Singh of Barwani comes in. A royal in his own right (Barwani being a small state in Madhya Pradesh), Manvendra though is one of the country's leading lights in the vintage and classic car moment and has been pursuing his hobby for over three decades, bringing old automotive dowagers to life and many a time unearthing many a story or anecdote to life about great cars in the first half of the last century.

With a persona like his, it was but natural that he was asked to be on the list of curators for the 62nd running of the concours with special emphasis on classes E1 and E2. The former focused on great Maharaja cars from all over the world while the latter focused on Maharaja Rolls-Royces only, logical this because were it not for the largesse of our royals and their splurging capability, the firm could have had a torrid time financially, especially in the period between the two world wars.

These two classes also infused a handful of car enthusiasts to dream about hitting the greens at Pebble and while in the final analysis only two cars went from India while a third came in from England, there could have been two others (). Sadly one dropped off due to the enormity of the costs involved while the other's chances to make it to the US were scuppered by the unprofessional approach of a leading garage to whom it had been entrusted for a spruce up.

That said, it was great to see none else than H.H. Arvind Singh Mewar, the Maharana of Udaipur take his 1924 Rolls-Royce 20 H.P. to Pebble Beach while joining him for the concours from India was Bangalore-based car collector Dr Ravi Prakash who brought along the ex-Maharaja Holkar of Indore's magnificent 1930 Delage D8. While the Rolls-Royce has had nothing but royal care and ownership ever since it first came to India, purchased by the Maharaja of Jodhpur in 1924, it is interesting to note that this car came into the Udaipur royal garage in 1935 specifically for being cannibalized for spares to keep no less than four other similar cars in operating condition

Over the years it lost its original engine to keep another of its stablemates motoring and for almost the better part of four decades it was stored and kept. Thankfully, the enthusiastic Shriji, as H.H. Arvind Singh Mewar is better known as, commissioned a complete restoration and the car is now in as close a state as when she first rolled off the Rolls-Royce works at Derby in England. What Shriji and his team always kept in mind was to keep everything as standard and near to original as possible without in any way overdoing things ().

Absolutely correct line of thought for Pebble Beach because unlike the time in the 1990s when over-restoration seemed to dominate many concours d'elegance events, thankfully the likes of Pebble Beach and Villa d'Este have set things right where originality comes first and foremost and as such the Udaipur Rolls was spot on No wonder then that Shriji and the Rolls Twenty created a bit of history on debut at Pebble Beach, being awarded the Lucius Beebe Trophy for a Rolls-Royce in the grand tradition. It was the first time ever an Indian-entrant had ever won a gong at Pebble Beach and it was fitting that it went to Shriji.

Sounds incongruous this but wait there's more When you are talking about the world's most prestigious classic car concours d'elegance, you have to understand that the venue for the last 62 years has always been the greens on the 18th fairway of the golf course on the Californian seaside resort. And as was the case of most of our Indian royalty who more often than not would indulge in holidaying on the continent in the heat of the Indian summer, this time round the US beckons with a completely nostalgic fervour.

It is all about luxury and movement combined, about trappings of a kind where Indian clientele ruled the roost, at least in the first half of the last century and this reign threw up some of the most stunning, and not to say exquisite automobiles the world has ever seen. While the automobile may have got going in India courtesy a handful of Parsi diehards in Bombay and Poona, as the two cities were known then, the big boost to automobility in the land came thanks to our Maharajas and their innate quest to show each other up, in a nice and non-violent manner of course Cars became the weapon to prove a point, about power and pelf, prestige and standing and in such a scenario the car makers and the coachbuilders had a field day.

It was not just about Rolls-Royce which survived the tumultuous period between the two world wars thanks to the largesse of Indian royalty but the fact that we also got a taste of the aesthetic when some of the greatest car stylists wrought their craft on stunning one-offs for our rajas, maharajas, nawabs, thakor-sahibs, et al. The Italians had yet to make their mark but then there were names like Mulliner, Park Ward, Barker, Hooper, Windover, Figoni, Saoutchik, Le Baron, who were the initiators of the art form to embellish the hordes of Daimlers, Napiers, Rolls-Royces, Bentleys, Hispano-Suizas, Isotta-Fraschinis, Pierce Arrows, Cadillacs, Buicks, Lincolns, and many other makes which our royals invested in. And this investment was top notch, the quantity of the quality was mind-numbing in its entirety and the legends which sprung up in the automotive world have become a by-word for luxury, sophistication, technological prowess and one-upmanship.

After independence, the socialist clampdown on thought slammed the brakes on the profligacy of the royals to a great extent when it came time to splurge on cars and other items of conspicuous consumption Many royals couldn't keep what they had and many great cars became easy pickings for the unscrupulous. And lest it be said, dominating this breed of unscrupulous were the goras who raided the royal garages time and again in the unregulated 1950s, '60s and part of the '70s and made away with some of the richest automotive treasures that had an Indian connect.

Given India's place in the global scheme of things, and with a booming automotive industry, it was always when and not if for an event such as the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance to have a class for cars of the Maharajas. Sporadically we have seen great cars with a strong Indian provenance appear in scattered form at such events. However, today and tomorrow, on the hallowed turf at Pebble Beach in California, we will have no less than 16 to 18 of the greatest Maharaja cars assembling together to celebrate both the vain and the glorious, a bit of the former and quite a load of the latter. What is of immense interest is that never before has there been a gathering of this class and stature since probably the Delhi Durbars from a century ago and while a majority of the royal Indian cars now are in the hands of collectors from all over the world, three cars have made the journey from India for this event, marking a new milestone for the country and its heritage, both automotive and cultural.

To cap it all off, one of this trio will have an honest-to-goodness royal leading the way, in the form of His Highness, Arvind Singh Mewar, Maharana of Udaipur who will be at the wheel of his Barker-bodied 1924 Rolls-Royce 20 H.P. which has been in the Udaipur royal garage since the mid-1930s And also of course a welcome process of re-acquiring our lost heritage in the form of the 1934 Rolls-Royce Phantom II, formerly the pride and joy of the Maharaja of Rajkot. This car carrying coachwork by Thrupp andamp; Maberley was made as an official limousine cum cabriolet for the Rajkot royals. Finished in saffron and brushed aluminium, it was a grand machine and was promptly named the "Star of India." It was sadly spirited out of India in the mid-1960s but just a couple of years ago, the present day descendants of the Rajkot royals bought back "their" car at an auction and it would also be at Pebble Beach with none other than Yuvraj Saheb Mandhatsinh Jadeja at the helm. Would be a moment to cherish for the impressionable Yanks

However, while Indian royalty make their appearance on the greens at Pebble Beach, a major surprise among the Indian cars would be an exquisite sports car which once caught the fancy of the Maharaja Hari Singh Bahadur of Jammu andamp; Kashmir This young strapping ruler of the state happened to be in Paris at the time of the annual motor show and was mighty impressed by the rakish lines of the Mercedes-Benz 27/140/220 PS Type SS four-seat sports car. He bought it there and then itself but since it was in left hand drive form, the German firm took it back to Germany, changed the engine and the steering gear to the right and then shipped it to India where it was used to tear away in the mountain roads of the state. Again like so many of its ilk, this car was also spirited out of India and it went through a host of collectors until it was bought by Daimler-Benz itself some five years ago. Handed to Mercedes-Benz Classic for a thorough ground-up restoration, this car will finally see the light o day in its near original form and this would be just one of the many surprises in store at Pebble 2012 by so many thins Indian andndash; men, machines, tales and legends.

Tim Birkin, one of the original Bentley boys and a ferociously competitive soul to boot wanted a crack at not just winning the Le Mans 24 Hours but also the Brooklands 500 with special emphasis on setting the outright lap record on the Byfleet oval's fearsome banked but bumpy Outer Circuit. He knew that the standard 4.5-litre four-cylinder was not capable of winning consistently thanks to the heavy car not having the power in the face of newer competition.

Supercharging then was the way to go and Birkin first drew in supercharging expert Amherst Villiers to design and develop a special supercharger for the Bentley. Next he got fellow driver and South African diamond heir Woolf Barnato (then also the financial backer to Bentley Motors) to bless the project before finally dazzling the Hon. Dorothy Wyndham Paget to put up the money to finance the race campaign. The latter was needed because W O Bentley didn't care much for supercharging and so didn't want to do much with the car and this parallel race effort anyway.

This special car first carried a canvas body stretched over a spring-steel lattice frame structure. It was painted blue but it caught fire during the 1929 Brooklands 500 Miles Race. Undeterred, Birkin turned to Reid A Railton who designed a new body using aluminium beaten into the form intended by A P Compton andamp; Co. The car was now painted red and all of a sudden it seemed the fortunes changed.

Birkin won some great races at Brooklands with this car till early 1933 and some of them were the stuff of legend. He also set the Outer Circuit lap record, which was so dear to his heart. Unfortunately, in early 1933 while racing at Tripoli in Libya, Birkin suffered burns that saw him afflicted by septicaemia and he died in July that year.

The car remained with the Hon. Dorothy Paget, unused till it was sold to a Bentley enthusiast who converted it back to a two-seater Thankfully he retained the single-seater shell and from a progression of owners it finally landed in the George Daniels collection. Daniels is renowned as one of the world's greatest horologists and he was a long time Bentley enthusiast.

On his death, his entire collection went under the hammer, the famous auction house of Bonhams entrusted with the sale, which also included another Daniels Bentley that had an India connect. This was Maharaja of Bhavnagar's 1929 Bentley 4.5-litre four-seat tourer, which realised andpound;471,900 And if that wasn't all, a complete Bentley 4.5-litre engine in Daniel's possession went for andpound;59,740

Mega is the only word that comes to mind

TOP TEN CARS AT THE AUCTION

If the price fetched by the Birkin Blower Bentley seems a princely fortune, think again for it barely got it into the top ten of some great cars ever to go under the auctioneer's hammer. Here is a list of the top ten cars at auction over the years.

1. 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa Prototype - $16.39 million

At the 2011 Gooding andamp; Company's Monterey auction, this Testa Rossa, chassis number 0666 TR created history by being the most expensive car ever sold at an auction anywhere in the world. Natural this, because it was the first of the Testa Rossa's, and one with a rich racing history.

2. 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa andndash; $12.2 million

This breathtakingly beautiful pontoon-fendered TR (one of just 22 built) was sold by RM Auctions at its Leggenda e Passione event held in Maranello in 2008 and it also has a rich racing history writ large in its CV.

3. 1961 Ferrari GT SWB California Spyder - $10.9 million

Once the property of Hollywood actor James Coburn, this car was also one of the other big grossers at the 2008 RM Auctions Leggenda e Passione do at Maranello. Noted British radio jockey Chris Evans made the winning bid for this car.

4. 1931 Duesenberg Model J LWB Coupe - $10.34 million

Crafted for a wealthy eccentric collector with no amount of money being spared on this ultra special coupe, one of a handful built on the long wheelbase Duesenberg J chassis and with just five owners from new, this Duesy illustrates what other special examples of this marque can command if ever they come up for auction

5. 1931 Bugatti Royale Kellner Coupe - $9.7 million

Ettore Bugatti's magnum opus, the Kellner Coupe is one of just six Royales built and curiously the only one ever to come up for auction. That it garnered a record $9.7 million at a Christies' auction in London in the year 1987 makes it all the more special. I am sure that were it come up for auction today it would hammer every record for top dollar at auction.

6. 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Spezial Roadster - $9.68 million

Mercedes-Benz made just 25 of the 540K Spezial Roadsters and of this lot only a handful sported the long tail style with a covered spare tyre on the rear deck. On top of that just three such cars are known to be in existence and such cars rarely come on the auctioner's block, most being sold by direct sale. This car was sold at RM Auction's 2011 Monterey event.

7. 1962 Ferrari 330 TRI/LM Testa Rossa - $8.2 million

Very significant model from the Prancing Horse in that it was the last ever front engine Ferrari race car driven by the great American-Belgian duo of Phil Hill and Olivier Gendebien at Le Mans in 1962. Once again it was one of the highlights of the 2007 RM Auctions event held in Ferrari's assembly line at Maranello

8. 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Spezial Roadster - $ 8.2 million

Like the other Spezial Roadster, this is one of the 25 Spezials of the 406 540Ks built. Owned by F1 ringmaster Bernie Ecclestone, it sold at the 2007 RM Auctions 'Automobiles of London' event at Battersea for what then was a record price for a Mercedes-Benz.

9. 1929 Mercedes-Benz 38/250 SSK - $7.44 million

Bonhams sold this prized car, one of just 33 built at its 2004 auction at Sussex, U.K. The fact that it was in original condition without having been ravaged by time or war and without any restoration meant it was a great find.

10. 1929 Birkin Supercharged 'Blower' Bentley - $7.34 million

The car that prompted this feature and the latest one to burst into the all time priciest cars at auction top ten, it made this amount at Bonhams sale at the 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed last month. This exquisite one-of-a-kind Bentley racer also broke the record for the highest price ever achieved for a British car sold at an auction to date.

If ever there was a car I would have loved to see being raced in anger and in its prime nothing would have given me more pleasure than to see the W125 take on the Auto Union V16s and assorted Alfa Romeos, Maseratis, Bugattis, et al in 1937. Goodwood 2012 offered me another chance to see this great car and I was fascinated to see the Daimler-Benz Classic crew tending to it in period overalls and using the same set of tools and equipment as they did in the late 1930s.

The car featured a 5.6-litre straight supercharged engine developing 550bhp, which was housed in a very stiff ladder type chassis made up of oval tubing. What was so elaborate was the starting procedure.

The car would be fired up using a hand held electric starter to spin the motor to life. It would then be gently revved to get it up to operating temperature before the spark plugs would be pulled out, to be inspected. Bosch technicians did that on the race circuits in the 1930s but at Goodwood the technicians from Daimler-Benz Classic handled this chore. If the plugs were full of soot the mixture was deemed to be way too rich and this meant a change of jets. Conversely if the plugs looked dry and burnt it meant another jet change to enrichen the mixture.

This actually played out at Goodwood and to see the plug box shaped to conform to the curvature of the W125 while the mechanics worked on it and then fired it to life again was one of the highlights of a Grand Prix car which one very rarely see in this day and age.

If ever there is a shrine to celebrate speed, or the romance associated with it, then the place to head to is Goodwood in England. Not only is speed celebrated in the right way but more importantly for those dyed-in-the-proverbial-wool types like yours truly it is also the cathedral, where we go to worship. A cathedral where you not just get to meet your gods and check out their chariots but also to see, hear and talk with them To top it all off you also get to see these very heroes (who have been turned into virtual demigods) go out in the cars and on bikes they drove and rode to ultimate glory. It is like fast forward into the past in the most enjoyable manner possible

This then is the formula employed by the good Earl of Goodwood, Charles March when he set out to create an event, which brought cars and drivers across many eras together for enthusiasts to see and savour. The 2012 edition of the Festival of Speed was a stunner and having witnessed two previous events at this hallowed venue, I know that I want to keep coming back for more There is a class within the event which is termed the moving motor show, another innovation that the good Earl has pioneered but then it could also be termed the moving motor museum for where else could you get a 1903 Mercedes 60HP racer dicing with its mighty cousin from 1937, the supercharged W125 Grand Prix car and it's 1952 Le Mans winning 300SL plus the latest Mercedes MGP WO2?

And if you needed variety there was plenty to make grown men go weak at their knees - Ferraris, Maseratis, Alfas, BRMs, ERAs, Bentleys, Lagondas, Sunbeams, McLarens, Eagles, Porsches, Jaguars, Ford GT40s, Lotus, Cooper, Connaught, etc if you were of the four-wheeled bent. The motorcycle brigade was well catered to as well with great names like Norton, Triumph, BMW, Vincent, Moto Guzzi, Vincent, Jawa, DKW, Konig, Harley-Davidson, Yamaha, Suzuki, MV Agusta et al roared away in all their period glory.

And of course the brave and skilled men who piloted these magnificent machines were there to do so once again and show what it meant to race across decades. In so doing they also showed that while technology and techniques may have evolved, the drive and the desire remain the very essence which keeps the competitive fires burning Goodwood does justice to this ethos unlike no one else and when you have such men like Stirling Moss, John Surtees, Jackie Stewart, Emerson Fittipaldi, Jacky Ickx, Jenson Button, Damon Hill, Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg, Mark Webber, Sebastian Vettel, Klaus Ludwig, Kenny Roberts, Stuart Graham, Wayne Gardner, John McGuinness, Tory Corser, Sammy Miller, Hannu Mikkola, Bjorn Waldegaard, Juha Kankkunen, Rauno Aaltonen and many many others, you know that you are like a kid in a chocolate shop and you just can't get enough of the three days to go out and meet them all Suffering from riches is a Goodwood tradition and the crowds simply love it.

This year's featured marque was Lotus and there were no less than 40 examples of this fabled brand with cars ranging from the very first spindly sports cars to the earliest examples of the firm's rear-engined Grand Prix cars to a host of world championship winning greats plus also of course their GT machines and breathed-on hot saloons.

To see John Surtees drive the very same Lotus 18 powered by the 2.5-litre four-cylinder Climax engine he put on pole in the 1960 Portuguese F1 GP (just his third ever F1 start) seemed to role back the years as was seeing Stirling Moss in action with the very same Lotus 18 (sans it's lower bodywork) he drove to beat the all conquering Ferraris in the 1961 Monaco Grand Prix Both these sprightly gents exuded verve and class as they drove their machines with a silken touch.

Much the same was also in evidence when double world F1 champion Emerson Fittipaldi drove not just his championship winning Lotus 72 but also the classic Lotus 49 which the late Jim Clark and Graham Hill had decimated rivals with in 1967 and 1968. Speaking to his many fans at Goodwood, Emerson said, "The 72 was the best car I drove in my whole career. Colin Chapman was a genius and I am proud to have contributed to a small part of a great story."

Many more Lotus F1 greats were in action including the 77, the 78 and the 79 with which the great American drive Mario Andretti won the last world championship title for Lotus in 1979. That Colin Chapman of Lotus was among the very first to exploit ground effects in F1 cars, the 78 and 79 are very significant examples by virtue of being the first exponents of this aero-tech in the sport. A host of other Honda and Renault-engined Lotus F1 cars were also in attendance but then when you had Moss, Surtees, Fittipaldi, Ickx and Oliver piloting some of the greatest Lotus Grand Prix cars of all time, the old timers outshone the newer more modern machines.

And among the many gems from this marque was the Lotus 56B Grand Prix car from 1971. This car was powered by a Pratt andamp; Whitney gas turbine motor and featured four-wheel drive. It was developed from the STP Lotus gas turbine car which almost won the Indy 500 in 1970 and even though it started a couple of F1 GPs, it suffered from severe throttle lag and was also overweight, proving it to be a handful. Nonetheless the 56B did show off it's wedge-shaped stance which was further exploited by designer Maurice Philippe to churn up the superb Lotus 72 which went on to win in the hands of Jochen Rindt, Emerson Fittipaldi and Ronnie Petersen in an operating period which started form mid-1970 and extended till the end of 1973

One of the great things about Charles March and his team is the manner in which they research the cars and drivers they bring to the Festival every year. This year apart from the 1971 Le Mans 24 Hours winning Porsche 917K, there was also the classic Porsche 962C, in the Rothmans colours no less from the Porsche museum. While there were other Porsche 956s from 1982 and 1983, the 962C was the very machine that triumphed at Le Mans in 1987 And speaking of great sports cars, there also was a Matra-Simca 670B long tail racer of the type that won Le Mans in 1972, driven by one Graham Hill and Henri Pescarolo.

With this victory Graham remains the only man to have ever bagged motor sport's triple crown - the Monaco Grand Prix and the Indy 500 rounding off the triple strike. What was amazing was that this was the 1973 Le Mans winning machine and at Goodwood 2012 Graham's son Damon and his grandson Josh both took turns to give the Matra a blast down the main straight. That French beauty was awesome in its turnout and the music from its wailing V12 was something to die for.

One of the most happening events in the classic car world would unfold in mid-August this year when at the 62nd edition of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, there would be a couple of classes catering to cars owned by Indian royalty. Split up into two classes of which one would cater to Rolls-Royce automobiles favoured by the Indian royals to another which would encompass many other great brands ordered and used by our colourful rajas and maharajas, this is sure to bring together a bit of Indian automotive heritage together after so many years.

While the 1924 Rolls-Royce 20 H.P. from Jodhpur / Udaipur would be hard to beat for occasion and presence, what with His Highness Arvind Singhji Mewar himself being present at the concours, there are some other great gems which many would be able to feast their eyes on and take in. Not since the original Delhi Durbars would we be seeing so many great cars with an Indian provenance together and that as such is a unique occasion.

Of the other two cars winging their way from India to California, the first is the magnificent ex-Maharaja of Baria's 1930 Stutz Series M from the Diljeet Titus collection. Probably the only known Stutz in existence in India (probably the only one to have come to our shores) this is a gloriously restored machine. Joining it at Pebble Beach would be another 1930s car, this being the French Delage D8 carrying sports tourer coachwork by Figoni. Ordered originally by the Maharaja Holkar of Indore, this is now owned by Dr Ravi Prakash of Bangalore.

Probably the greatest car owned by an Indian and a royal to boot, to this very day would be the Thrupp andamp; Maberley cabriolet built on a 1934 Rolls-Royce Phantom II. Known as the 'Star of India' with its saffron and chrome coachwork, this was ordered new by the Maharaja of Rajkot and used for official duties until it went out of the country some time in the 1960s. It is now known that it was bought by the present Yuvraj Saheb Mandhatasinh Jadeja of the very same royal family of Rajkot and this would also be at Pebble possibly with the Yuvraj at its controls.

As one can make out from the list of cars due at Pebble Beach from our former royals, one of the most intriguing and also very interesting is the 1930 Mercedes-Benz 27/140/200 PS Type SS four-seat sports tourer from none other than Mercedes-Benz Classic Formerly the pride and joy of the Maharaja Bahadur of Kashmir, this car was subjected to a ground-up restoration by Mercedes-Benz Classic and should be one of the highlights in the Indian classes. Watch out for a full fledged report on the proceedings from Pebble Beach in our next issue.

From a car bought to be cannibalised for spares to keep other Rolls-Royce 20 H.P.s motoring in the Udaipur royal garage to its glorious resurrection to not just pride of place in the same fleet but also as the flag bearer of great Indian royal automobiles at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, is a story right out of a fable. Adil Jal Darukhanawala sheds light on GLK 21, the 1924 Rolls-Royce Twenty, originally ordered and owned by the Maharaja of Jodhpur and since the late 1930s doing duty in the automobile fleet of the Maharaja of Udaipur

Indian royalty loved their motor cars. And of course their other worldly possessions but then this was a matter of course because they had so much of it that not having one or two baubles wouldn't have dented their financial standing. However, honour was of even greater import than mere money and it was also the pride of being seen in the grandest at all times which saw so many royals (Maharajas, Rajas, Thakur Sahibs, Nawabs, etc, etc) take to the automobile with such gusto as they would have done so with horses and elephants in the century before the advent of the internal combustion powered vehicles.

One has heard many a tale of our royals buying exotic cars by the dozen for the simple reason that the impression thus created was massive on the minds Not just on their subjects but also on their peers and compatriots This latter aspect was one which more often than not had many a raja ranged against a maharaja (and vice versa) in competition for the most powerful automobile just as they would have fought for the hand of princess in earlier times. That buying many units of the same model in one go was because they could afford them to show off and not because of there being a wholesale price charged for the purchase Woe betide anyone was it to be known that some motor manufacturer had offered a discount and a royal had accepted

However, among the over 278 Indian royals classified at the time of Independence, we also saw quite a few of them who were genuine motoring enthusiasts and who had great taste, be it displayed in the marque they chose, the coachwork they specified or the special one-offs they commissioned. So many of the greatest automotive names in existence at that time made special cars for our royals and while many did acknowledge that they had to have at least a couple of Rolls-Royces for official duties, this didn't prevent them from investing in Lanchesters, Daimlers, Hispano-Suizas, Isotta-Fraschinis, OMs, Mercedes-Benz, Delages, Delahayes, Minervas, Cadillacs, Duesenbergs, et al.

In fact motoring history is the richer because of our royals and their penchant for great and grand cars and on August 19 this year, one would get a glimpse of some of these magnificent machines which our Maharajas drove and rode in their heyday when these beauties roll down on the famed 18th fairway of the Pebble Beach golf course for the 62nd Concours d'Elegance.

And of the eclectic () lot at Pebble this year would be the car splashed across these pages and a few overleaf, the 1924 Rolls-Royce 20 H.P. entered by His Highness Shri Arvind Singhji Mewar of Udaipur. While many would question the stature of a mere Twenty against the likes of a Phantom II or III this car and its entry is without a doubt one of the most significant for Pebble Beach in its history. It would be the first time that a Maharaja car would be driven on the hallowed greens with its Maharaja owner riding shotgun In fact, this car will also do the 17-mile Tour d'Elegance on August 16, running through scenic vistas as the route winds through mountains and valleys along the California coast with a mid-way halt at Carmel-by-the-Sea.

For a car that is near 90 years old, and maintained and restored in India to take in such a drive would be a wonderful occasion For the record, driving duties on the Tour d'Elegance would be handled by my close friend and fellow automobile journo Bob Rupani and Graham Ashley-Carter who played a major role in the restoration of this car. Shreeji would be joined by his daughter Princess Padmaja Kumariji Mewar and his son-in-law Rajkumar Sahib Dr Kush Singhji Parmar of Santrampur on this 17-mile run.

While this is an interesting scenario waiting to be played out, let's take in the car and its history. We begin with the Rolls-Royce angle to the 20 H.P., this being a car developed in the years immediately after the First World War when the 40/50 H.P. Silver Ghost was the only model in the Rolls-Royce portfolio. This was a large and very powerful car more often than not being the preserve of the wealthy and therefore often used as a chauffeur-driven machine. The Rolls-Royce board worked out that a smaller 20 H.P. car be developed (code named Goshawk) which could cater to the owner-driver set and also be manufactured and sold at a price lesser than the Silver Ghost.

Around the period 1917-19, Sir Henry Royce was clear that while engine downsizing had to be embraced, it was not to be at the cost of performance. And for inspiration to that effect he looked at some of the Grand Prix cars from Peugeot and Mercedes which had done well in the French GPs of 1912,'13 and '14. In fact, he purchased the 1913 French GP winning Peugeot which featured a 5.6-litre engine with gear-driven overhead camshafts operating four valves per cylinder to learn more about getting the desired performance from a smaller engine.

If that was not all, he also got to check out the 1914 French GP winning Mercedes of Christian Lautenschlager which came into his hands for some time and it proved valuable not just during the design and development of Project Goshawk but also during the Eagle development programme where RR explored the possibility of using sohc and dohc actuated valve gear on its six-cylinder 40/50 H.P. motors which were all pushrod operated.

Given the fact that production engineering machinery was not of a high order then, and to maintain the silent operation associated with the Rolls-Royce creed, it was decided to go with pushrod actuation for the 20 H.P. engine. This unit featured a 3127cc six-cylinder in-line having a single cylinder block and a detachable cylinder head for the first time in RR history. The crankcase was in aluminium alloy and it featured coil ignition to begin with, a stand-by magneto being an option at launch in 1922 before magneto ignition became standard fitment from 1923 onwards. The 20 H.P. came with a three-speed manual gearbox at launch with a centre gear change but with the adoption of a four-speed manual from 1925 onwards, the gear shift lever was positioned to the right, next to the driver's foot. Early cars featured brakes only on the rear wheels but from 1925 all four wheels had servo-assisted brakes.

This 20 H.P., more popularly known within the RR fraternity as the "Small Horsepower" range met with immediate acceptance and Rolls-Royce made close to 3000 units in the period from 1922 to 1929 and of these quite a number came to India as well. The Twenty (as the car was popularly known) could be recognised from its larger and bigger engined Silver Ghost elder sibling, by the use of horizontally arranged shutters on its radiators. In fact, the last series close to 1928-29 featured vertical shutters.

The Twenty was clothed in very many types of bodies by some of the best known coach builders of the day including Hoopers, H J Mulliner, Weymann, Thrupp andamp; Maberley, Windovers, Cockshoot, Mann Egerton, etc but the one coachbuilder which clothed the majority of the Twentys, both in England and those which came to India was Barker. Its barrel shaped tourer was the most popular but other regular touring bodies and cabriolets plus very nifty doctor's coupes were also seen in India.

Moving now on to the Indian provenance of the car we have here on these pages. This car was one of three RR Twentys ordered brand new by the Maharaja of Jodhpur in 1923. Two of these were delivered in 1923 (chassis numbers GH 73 and GRK 69) while the third (GLK 21) was delivered in 1924. It is the latter which as used extensively by the Jodhpur royals before it was sold off to one of the most reputed car dealers in Jodhpur in the early 1930s andndash; Seth Shri Motilal Sanghi. Shift from Jodhpur to Udaipur and this royal house also was in love with not just the Twenty but also with others from the RR stable.

It started with a 1914 Silver Ghost (chassis number 64 AB) which is yet in their possession and then it added no less than four Twentys to the royal garage. Three of these were ordered directly from RR in 1923 (chassis numbers 42 GO, 64 H9 and GAK 43) while a fourth (66 H9) formerly owned by the Nawab Moin ud-din Dowla was later added to the fleet. Maharaja Bhupal Singh was so fascinated by the Twenty that despite suffering from a physical deficiency, he prevailed upon Rolls-Royce to create a Twenty with special hand controls (throttle and clutch) for him to be able to drive. This was done on 64 H9 and this car remains to this day in the country, being part of the Orissa-based Patnaik collection.

It so transpired that in the 1930s, the Udaipur royal garage began to feel the pinch as regards a lack of spare parts for the Twentys and so the decision was taken to acquire another similar car which could be a mother lode of spares for those already in use. The Jodhpur Twenty was proferred by Seth Sanghi and thus the GLK 21 was bought for spares for the Udaipur garage. When 42 GO needed urgent engine work, GLK 21's engine was taken out and fitted into this chassis while the former's mill was stored and kept. This made GLK 21 a non-runner and she sat thus for a long time. In the meantime, 42 GO was sold off and is now in England while 66 H9 is in the Delhi-based Sudhir Choudherie collection. Not much is known about the whereabouts of GAK 43 and we would love to hear of it from any one of our readers.

In the late 1980s, the Udaipur Palace garage began to take stock of all what it had and the decision was taken to make the engine from 42 GO operational and fitted into GLK 21 which was virtually intact. Enter Graham Ashley-Carter who was roped in not just for his expertise but also for his enthusiasm and the damaged engine was resurrected and brought back to life. The entire car also got a complete makeover here in Udaipur itself and since the last few years it has been motoring on its own power in probably the best state of tune since she left the Rolls-Royce works in Derby, England. Credit Annu Vikram Singh, the curator of the Udaipur collection for this feat and also of course Ashley-Carter.

This Twenty as you can make out from Kunal Khadse's exquisite photography has a very distinctive all-aluminium sports tourer coachwork by Barker and comes with that rakish split vee-windscreen. Also the striking interplay of painted and polished surfaces makes it stand out so very differently from other Twentys in this country. It is a fantastic car and has all the original details intact including the original instrumentation plus the de rigeur ornamentation from the royal Udaipur family clearly evident. It is a gorgeous dowager in all its period originality and for sure with Shreeji on hand it will make for the most eclectic owner-car combination at Pebble Beach this year.

The third edition of the Cartier 'Travel with Style' concours d'elegance would be held in Mumbai in February 2013 and will feature some new classes including a very welcome move to add motorcycles to the mix as has been done by many other major events of their kind abroad. There will be three classes for motorcycles: pre-war classics till 1939; post war classics from 1940 to 1960 and racing motorcycles till 1960.

There is just one new class added to the car category - the Edwardian class for cars from the early pioneering days till 1914. The other classes would include pre-war classics from 1915 to 1939; post-war classics-America for American cars of course from 1940 to 1960; post-war classics-Europe for European cars from 1940 to 1960; roadsters till 1960; Indian heritage class for RHD cars assembled from CKD kits and/or cars manufactured in India from 1947 to 1960. Rounding off the car class would be the very important preservation class for unrestored but intact and operational cars in original form till 1960.

It is no secret that there is a great clamour for many to be considered worthy for invitation to the Cartier concours and for this reason a new selection process has been set into play. Entries with photographs and history would have to be sent for consideration to a panel of judges headed by H.R.H. Prince Michael of Kent who is the chief judge for the event. The panel will select the final cars for the Mumbai event which is as in the first two editions by invitation only. Applications must be emailed to concoursindia@gmail.com and must be submitted by August 31, 2012.

Another typical British event packing in classic cars, great racing cars from the past and the present and by and large being held on the same lines of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the 2012 edition of the Cholmondeley Pageant of Power attracted over 50,000 people despite inclement weather.

Held over May 15 to 17, the event had great cars on static display (well over 1000) as well as hot action over the 1.2-mile course where machines from different eras vied for fastest time of day. Bentley, Jaguar, Ford and BMW were out in force with their great machines while great F1 and sports cars from the past were in attendance as were some of the aero-engined monsters from the 1920s

A great sight was that of the 1910 Edison-Puton Monowheel which turned a wheel and propelled its rider on the slippery tarmac in great style while another top star was the 1955 Moto Guzzi 500cc V8-engined Grand Prix bike, one of just three built This bike was handled by noted trials ace Sammy Miller who had many other machines from his magnificent motorcycle museum in attendance at Cholmondeley.

Dubbed as one of the highlights of the international automobile year, the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance ranks as one among a handful of the great events for classic cars (two others being the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este and the other being the Goodwood Festival of Speed). I have always been a great fan of Pebble Beach for the manner in which it celebrates great cars and this year there is even greater significance at this event because among its many classes is one for cars of the Maharajas

While you may have already read this in an earlier issue of this magazine, we can tell you that among the 15 cars selected from collectors around the world; no less than four would be making the trip from India for this prestigious event The glorious 1930 Stutz Series M dual cowl speedster with body by Le Baron, formerly the pride and joy of the Maharaja of Baria and now owned by Diljeet Titus will be part of the Indian quartet as also would be the 1930 Delage D8 featuring drop head coupe bodywork by Figoni.

This distinctive Delage features cycle fenders and was originally ordered and used by Maharaja Yashwantraoji Holkar of Indore before it found its way to Bangalore-based collector Dr Ravi Prakash. The third car to go from India for this prestigious event is Amir Ali Jetha's magnificent 1937 Phantom II Continental. It is recorded that only three Phantom II Continentals came to India, of which one is with a collector overseas and there is no trace of the third. Jetha's PII, bearing chassis no. 62UK, has been clothed by J Gurney Nutting in a streamlined coupe body style and this car, formerly owned by the Maharaja of Jodhpur is sure to impress show goers on the greens of Pebble Beach.

However, it is the fourth car which will evoke the greatest interest because it goes with its owner who is a true-blue Indian royal befitting the title of the great kings. The car in question is that depicted above, a 1924 Rolls-Royce 20 H.P., featuring a Barker barrel body. Chassis number GLK21 was ordered by the Maharaja of Jodhpur who used it till 1935 before selling it to Seth Shri Motilal Sanghi of the same city. The latter is revered among the automobile dealer fraternity of the country as being one of the most knowledgeable and influential car importers and dealers in the era before independence in the Rajasthan region. He in turn sold it to Maharana Bhupal Singh Mewar of Udaipur who was very fond of Rolls-Royce Twentys and he presumably bought it to cannibalise it for spares

Thankfully the car never did suffer this fate and it has been kept in exact standard config right thru, fettled by the mechanics in the royal garages which have now been converted to house the Vintage andamp; Classic Car Collection of the Maharaja of Udaipur. This car will be piloted on the event by none other than the present Maharana Shreeji Arvind Singh Mewar-Udaipur and riding shotgun with His Highness would be his friend and classic car aficionado Bob Rupani. While there will be many other great Maharaja cars in attendance from collections abroad, it would be hard for the Duesenbergs, Minervas, Rolls-Royce, Mercedes-Benz and others to beat the potent patina of a genuine Maharaja Rolls with a Maharaja at the helm

Many would say so, insists Adil Jal Darukhanawala after being privy to the 2012 Concorso dEleganza Villa dEste

Every year in May, a small bunch of carefully selected classic cars and bikes assembles in the vicinity of Cernobbio, a picturesque village on the shores of Lake Como where the Hotel Villa d'Este and the neighbouring Villa Erba play host to what many state is the best and the most prestigious concours d'elegance in the world. The 2012 edition was held on the weekend of May 25-27 and in keeping with tradition, the event was a stunner with mind-blowing cars and bikes. I say mind blowing not just keeping in view the restoration (sympathetic but not over the top) but also the rich histories behind many of them and also the fact that all the owners weren't averse to giving the cars their head, making the grand spectacle a really marvelous outing for enthusiasts and the public alike.

As always there were 51 cars carefully vetted (by the time of the annual Geneva Motor Show in March every year) and when you understand how effectively yet passionately has BMW patronised this event that the who's who of the international motoring world were there to see the beauties from the classic twenties to the latest concepts. Yes this is another aspect of the Concorso d'Eleganza that highlights one-off modern concepts and protos so that it carries the original theme of the event as it was in 1929.

Loads of great cars made the nine classes (many of these classes being evocatively named andndash; Interpretations of Elegance, The Art of Streamlining, Little Jewels, Stars of the Rock 'N' Roll Era, La Dolce Vita, Gentleman's Sports Cars and Heroes of Le Mans to name some of them) but what stood out was not just the grand oldies but the diverse spread lavishly laid out. From the only example of the 1939 Mercedes-Benz 540K Spezial Roadster on a short wheelbase chassis to a 1941 Chrysler Town andamp; Country (replete with a replica child push car in the luggage bay), from the ultra rare 1950 Abarth 204A (only seven were built and one of these was raced by none other than the great Tazio Nuvolari) to the Porsche 917K which actually starred in Steve McQueen's movie epic Le Mans and had wins at Monza, Daytona, Osterreichring, Spa, Monterey and Barcelona.

Ferraris, Maseratis (a couple of them were just plain dead gorgeous), an original Countach and a Miura SV Jota, fastback Bentley Continentals, one of the rare Graber-bodied Alvis coupes, a smattering of Rolls-Royces, almost a complete line-up of every type of Ferrari 250 GT, a grand Packard V12 (driven all the way from Spain), an elegant 1937 Delahaye 145 Coupe with bodywork by Chapron, and an amazing Avions Voisin C25 sedan were some of the great machines one got to ogle, hear and soak it all in. If that wasn't all, there was a separate display at the Villa Erba which focused on bubble cars only andndash; the tiny micro cars of which there were aplenty in Europe in the 1950s.

As a small window into the wonderful world of automobiles, the 2012 edition of the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este ran true to form. Classy and understated but totally unrestrained in displaying the joy of motoring, it was an eye opener in more ways than one.

ALFA IS BEST OF SHOW

Tiny and petite it might appear but this 1933 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GS packs a mighty punch No not just because it did the unthinkable and walk away with all the three Best of Show awards at the Villa d'Este (happened only once before with the Mercedes-Benz Trossi roadster of Ralph Lauren) but because this rare sixth series 6C 1750 was the very car which appeared on the firm's stand at the 1933 Paris Motor Show. It featured the same swoopy coupe body by Paris-based Italian coachbuilder Figoni (the firm didn't become Figoni andamp; Falaschi till 1935) and then its owner decided to race it at Le Mans in the 24 hours classic For this purpose the Figoni body was removed and a lightweight alloy roadster body was fitted. Armed thus it went ahead and raced to a class victory in the 1935 Le Mans 24 Hours and also finished 6th overall

After this race win, thankfully the owner decided to swap back to the original closed coupe body by Figoni and then the car was sent to South Africa where it was discovered and owner David Cohen embarked on a ground up restoration. The quality of the job plus the efficacy of Vittorio Jano's inline six-cylinder motor and assorted mechanicals powered this Alfa to the Best of Show by the jury, the invitees and media as well as the public No one begrudged it this clean sweep. Now Pebble Beach beckons in August and it would be hard for this Alfa not to add to its repertoire

THE BATMAN ROLLS-ROYCE

Well, that is not exactly true though to be honest this car could very well have been apt for Batman to traverse in the city of Gotham thanks to its sheer drama, length, girth and overpowering presence This 1925 Phantom I is a Rolls-Royce like no other and was ordered new by none else than the Maharaja of Nanpara who kept it in London for his exclusive use until he tired of it and sold it off a few years later. The buyer than had it re-bodied, by Belgian coachbuilder Jonckheere, in this extravagantly racy coupe bodywork and it went through a series of owners until it was acquired by the Petersen Museum. The sloping radiator, the round doors, the massive tail and the awesome weight andndash; over three tonnes, means this is a machine you never mess with Batman would have loved it

The beautiful vistas of Lake Como surrounding the picturesque Cernobbio village come alive in the summer every year when the world's classiest concours d'elegance for classic cars and bikes is held. Begun as an event for Italian coachbuilders to show off their art and craft as long back as 1929, German car maker BMW's patronage and whole-hearted support to the Concorso D'Eleganza Villa D'Este since 1999 has elevated what was a fine event into truly one of the greatest events of its kind in the automobile world. And what is truly the gentle art of nurturing a century-old craft of bespoke coachwork, BMW has also worked to include a class for modern concept cars and prototypes which again hints back to the very ethos of the old age Italian carrozzerias and their custom coachwork.

So imagine the collective surprise when in the inaugural session of this year's edition, Karl Baumer, head of BMW Group Classic and the BMW Museum announced that something truly exclusive would drive up for all the assembled guests to take in. In drove one of the stunning BMW 507 V8-engined two-seater sports cars from the late 1950s, so very elegant and such a delight that it seemed like this car was always built to grace such a beautiful country as Cernobbio. Of course this wasn't the surprise for suddenly a red rocket burst into the grounds, a loud bark from its tuned exhaust letting us hear it before we could see it.

A svelte hard top coupe sporting a twin-bubble roof and with the very apparent Kamm-back moved into view and when it stopped and the two occupants stepped out to loud applause one could understand what the surprise was. Out stepped BMW's design boss Adrian van Hooydonk along with Andrea Zagato, CEO of the eponymous design consultancy and coach building firm. An immediate reaction was that BMW had moved the goalposts on its Z platform to come up with a very modern rendition unlike the neo-retro style the Z4 and Z8 carried but when it became clear that this was a design exercise done in the very same vein as the M1 Hommage and 328 Hommage a few years ago not many were willing to buy it The reason was obvious; more than any other design studies shown by BMW exclusively conjured for the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa D'Este, this new Zagato Coupe makes terrific sense, and it seemed so production ready

The other knockout was that this was the very first time that BMW had collaborated with Zagato to clothe one of its cars and the overall turnout of this creation was not stylish of course but also emotional in the sense that so many Zagato cues were on display on a modern machine. While Adrian van Hooydonk and Karim Habib, the new design chief for BMW cars played their role from the Munich car maker's perspective, Andrea Zagato and his chief designer Norihiko Harada managed to evoke great detailing of the past in a seamless manner on a contemporary automobile. "Besides its road-acceptance, the BMW should express the emotion of this study," remarked Andrea at the unveiling.

The curvaceous shape on the Z4-based car makes it carry off its visually very long bonnet with a fastback rear end (both BMW and Zagato were early proponents of the Kamm-back school of aerodynamic thought) encompassing a small cockpit and makes for a stunning package. The subtle Zagato cues are all there andndash; the twin bubble roof ('tis said to accommodate helmeted heads in sports car racing in the 1950s and 1960s as seen on many Ferraris, Maseratis and Aston Martins sculpted by Zagato), the absolute minimal overhangs front and rear, the stylishly muscular wheel arches, the rakish rear ends, the valence crease on the bonnet, and the only thing which seemed a departure from the norm was the mesh on the twin kidney grille made up of tiny little Zs.

BMW has worked with other Italian design houses before, especially the likes of Vignale and ItalDesign but the opportunity to collaborate with Zagato was so much in sync with the very ethos of the bespoke custom-clothed car as evidenced in the first half of the last century. And having an Italian take care of the design meant that even the special red shape andndash; termed Rosso Vivace was both beautiful to behold as well as express Underneath the double-bubbled roof is fairly contemporary territory but the confines of the Z4's cockpit had been given the Zagato treatment with both comfort and the feelgood essence apparent in the way of accents, materials and craftsmanship.

Form follows function and what was made clear a day later was the fact that this was no beautiful soft glove approach to doing a show car but one which had been thoroughly put through the development wringer by BMW engineers in Germany. Under the bonnet is the proven N54 six-cylinder, twin-turbocharged engine now breathed upon (software updates to the EMS plus an all-new exhaust system) helps bump up power from the normal 340bhp to well over 400bhp BMW's 7-speed twin-clutch transmission manages the transfer of power to the rear wheels in time honoured fashion and those large five-spoke 19-inch wheels come wrapped with 255/35-R19 Bridgestone Potenza rubber.

One of the finest offerings in this class of car remains the Porsche Cayman and all of a sudden BMW could be challenging this notion with the strikingly elegant and potent Zagato Coupe. As Adrian mentioned to yours truly in the course of an exclusive one-on-one at the Villa d'Erba, the enthusiasm for the new car has been overwhelming and it is difficult to ignore that. So if mass production doesn't beckon, a small production run of a thousand units would do just as nicely for an emotional design that works, brilliantly

The finest coachbuilders in Italy built bodies for the 6C 2500 models, including Pinin Farina, Stabilimenti Farina, Touring, Ghia, Bertone, Michelotti, and Boneschi among others. It was one of the most expensive series produced cars of its time because of the options it came with. The 2.5-litre straight six engine on the 6C 2500 produced 89PS of power.
