Tata Kite compact sedan spotted testing in India

Tata Motors is busy testing its forthcoming new car – the Tata Kite (Update 9/02/2017: model now called Tata Tigor). Images of the compact sedan doing test rounds at the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu have surfaced on the web.

The new Tata Kite is based on the Tata Indigo eCs platform. In an effort to hide the lines of the car, the test mule was heavily disguised. The car is expected to feature an aggressive design language. We expect the interior to come with a modern layout with improvements in the fit and quality of materials to be used.

The new Tata Kite will be available in both petrol and diesel engine options. A 1.2-litre petrol engine is expected to do duty under the new Kite. Reports also suggest that the car may come equipped with a new three-cylinder oil-burner. Gearbox options will include a standard 5-speed manual unit, while an automated manual transmission (AMT) could also be offered.

Tata Motors recently launched the Tata Zest in India. The Zest is slowly gaining popularity in India in the entry-level compact sedan segment. Like the Zest, the Tata Kite, too, is expected to have a hatchback sibling which will replace the aging Tata Indica once launched.

We expect the new Tata Kite to arrive in the Indian market towards the end of 2015. This new compact sedan will be manufactured at the carmaker’s production facility in Sanand, Gujarat.
