Tata Motors first showcased the Zest at the 2014 Auto Expo earlier this year as its sub 4-metre sedan challenger which it will launch tomorrow. The car will face some pretty stiff competition from the likes of the Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent and the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire.
Although the Zest looks new, it retains the same underpinnings that we have already experienced on the Vista and the Manza. The Zest though gets an all new design, better looking and built interiors and an improved suspension setup. The overall build quality too feels supremely improved over the Tata car that we have known so far. But the biggest change of them all is in the engine.
The Zest will be powered by a new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol unit that the company has christened Revotron and the 1.3-litre Multijet engine from Fiat. Both these engines pump maximum power of 90PS but at 200Nm the diesel produces more torque than the 140Nm petrol engine. Both engines will come mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox while the diesel will also be offered with an AMT or Automated Manual Transmission.
With regards to the looks too, Tata Motors seem to have made considerable progress and is in fact a huge step up over the Indigo CS, Vista as well as the Manza. The Zest has the typical smiley face with the honeycomb grille and the chrome that runs along the top as well as the bottom of the grille. The large headlamp mingles well with the grille. At the back, the Zest gets LED tail lights and a well-moulded bumper. In profile, it doesn’t look quite as proportionate thanks to the relatively large boot and the short boot
Tata Motors believes that the launch of this car will mark a new chapter for them and while it has what it takes to give the competition a tough challenge, a lot of it will depend on how competitively it is priced.
