After the strategic joint venture announced with Lohia Auto, UM Motorcycles has opened up dealership avenues in the southern and western markets.
The company’s first product will be a 400cc cruiser, priced under Rs 2 lakh, and will be launched by June 2015. UM says the company will adopt a multi-pronged strategy on safety and technology and this cruiser will feature dual disc brake set up as well as ABS.
The American motorcycle manufacturing company, which has presence in over 20 countries, has chalked out a plan to appoint 75 dealers across 50 cities in India by July 2015. UM’s manufacturing facility is located in Kashipur, Uttarakhand, utilizing Lohia group’s current facility with a capacity to produce over a lakh units a year.
Initially, UM will be offering only cruisers and subsequently bikes of other classes will also be launched. Miami-based UM International, which makes street bikes, dual sport bikes and cruisers, will be using the facility in India as an export hub, shipping made-in-India bikes to the Asia Pacific region, Africa and even the US.
