When we broke the story about the Volkswagen compact sedan being considered last year, we knew that it was just a matter of time before test mules for this India specific car would be spotted by us or one of our fellow publications. And now they have. Here are the first pictures of the upcoming Volkswagen Compact Sedan being tested and our sources indicate that the car will be launched in India on May 25.
The compact sedan, which will be based to look like the Polo and the Vento will be under 4-meters to attract the excise cut and will be the new entry-level sedan from the German manufacturer. Based on the same platform it seems like the new compact sedan will feature crisp styling and will not look disproportionate like some of the other cars in the segment.
The sedan will have the same engines and gearbox that you find in the Polo, a 1.2-litre petrol engine or a 1.5-litre diesel engine making 75PS and 90PS respectively. Both engines will be initially mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox mated to a front wheel drive setup. We also expect a GT TSI and GT TDI version of this car to eventually join the field with the 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine and the uprated 1.5-litre diesel engine. Also expect a petrol and diesel version mated to the DSG automatic gearbox to follow eventually. Although what Volkswagen will name the car is uncertain at this point, we have a very strong feeling about the 2016 Volkswagen Compact Sedan being named the Bora to go in sync with the Bora notchback from the 90s.
