Honda Cars India Limited (HCIL) has unveiled the much awaited new Honda City in an exclusive world premier today. The new Honda City, now in it’s 4th generation since it’s launch in India in 1998 (7th Generation if you consider global versions) will be available for the first time with both a Diesel and a Petrol engine.

Honda City Rear

The new Honda City in terms of exterior design in an evolution over the last generation Honda City with an addition of a few distinctly placed curves and creases that make the new car look mature and luxurious as compared to it’s predecessors. From the front, the new City features a generous dose of chrome on its grille and its chrome festooned headlamp cluster. The bumper design accentuates the City’s sporting pretentions with a sculptured air dam and two large supplementary grilles that hold the fog lamp assemblies. The front fenders look muscular with a distinct line that runs all the way from the bottom of the bumper to the rear view mirrors. The Mirrors get integrated clear lens turn indicators that add to the City’s impressive feature list.

Honda City side

The City features 175/65 R15 tyres which appear to be too small for a car of this segment. The wheels too could have been slightly better designed as the one’s showcased today appear too plain for the City. From the rear, the large horizontally stacked tail lamps look fantastic and are connected by a large chrome accent piece that accentuates the tail gate. The tail gate itself is extremely well sculptured and is one of our favorite features on the new Honda City.

The City’s interiors too have been refreshed heavily. With a new 5-inch touch screen infotainment system with 8 speakers, rear AC vents and a rear view camera, the new Honda City comes well equipped for a car in it’s category. The front seats are well crafted and offer a lot of back, lumbar and under thigh support. The rear bench seats too offer more space than before due to the new City’s longer wheelbase. The new Honda City is longer by 50mm at 2600mm while maintaining it’s overall length of 4440mm as compared to it’s predecessor. The new Honda City is taller by 10mm too as compared to it’s predecessor thereby offering a tad bit more headroom for the larger passenger.

2014 Honda City Diesel Engine

The New Honda City will feature both Diesel and Petrol 1.5 Litre Engines. The 1.5 Litre i-DTEC engine that powers the Honda Amaze will also do duty in the new Honda City. Although the original power plant makes 100PS of peak power and 200NM of peak torque, the new Honda City might get a slightly uprated power plant with about 110PS and 220-240NM of torque. The 1.5 Litre i-Vtec petrol engine will come with the same 118PS of power and 146NM of torque as it’s predecessor and will come with both a manual and automatic transmission with Paddle shifters as standard.

Although not much else has been revealed at this Global Unveil of the 2014 Honda City, we estimate the Honda City to set new benchmarks in fuel efficiency in it’s segment. We speculate the new Honda City to be priced extremely competitively at under Rs.9 Lakh for the entry-level version, which might help it undercut competition like the Hyundai Verna, the Volkswagen Vento, the Skoda Rapid, Fiat Linea, Ford Fiesta and the Suzuki SX4.
