Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to introduce a diesel variant of its new Maruti Suzuki Celerio small car. The Maruti Celerio is the cheapest automatic car in India which comes with the automatic manual transmission (AMT) gearbox.  This small hatch from Maruti’s stable has been spotted at the carmaker’s stockyard at its Manesar facility and first images of the same have hit the web.

The highlight of the Celerio will be the 800cc twin-cylinder diesel engine which has been developed internally by the company in India, unlike the 1.3-litre Multijet which it outsources from Fiat. The two-cylinder diesel engine is expected to churn out 52PS of power and 150Nm of torque and deliver fuel-efficiency figures of nearly 30kmpl.

Currently, the Maruti Celerio is powered by a three-cylinder K-series 1.0-litre petrol driven engine which produces a maximum power of 67PS and a peak torque of 90Nm. The petrol Celerio is offered in a five-speed manual transmission model and in an automatic transmission model. With the addition of the diesel engine, the sales for the hatchback are likely to go up, though, we are not sure yet if the diesel version will get the AMT gearbox.

There are no changes expected on the exterior except for the DDiS badges at the sides and the rear. The Celerio diesel like the petrol, will be available in LDi, VDi and ZDi trims. This upcoming diesel hatch will also get features such as dual front airbags, ABS, alloy wheels and a music system with steering mounted controls.
