Yamaha Délight

Yamaha Délight

Expected Launch Date: First half of 2015

Expected Price: Rs 53,000

For 2015, Yamaha India plans to expand its scooter portfolio by launching a new the Délight. The Yamaha Délight has been spotted testing in our market and it is expected that the Japanese two-wheeler giant will soon launch the new scooter. The Délight sports retro looks, with a round headlight and overall old school design that has shades of the Vespa in its styling. In the international market the Yamaha Délight is powered by a fuel-injected 114cc motor. But it is expected the Indian-spec scooter will borrow the 113cc single cylinder engine as seen on the existing Ray and Alpha models. With its charming old school looks, the Délight, if launched, will be pitted squarely against the likes of Vespa, but will be possibly priced considerably cheaper than the Italian brand. The Délight however, is likely to be positioned as a premium offering from Yamaha and will, in all likelihood, be priced marginally higher than the Alpha and Ray models.

Yamaha 125cc scooter

Yamaha 125cc scooter

Expected Launch Date: Mid 2015

Expected Price: Rs 55-60,000

Yamaha has tasted a fair bit of success in the Indian scooter market owing to its Ray series and the Alpha that was launched in 2014. Continuing its expansion in the scooter segment, Yamaha India will launch its first 125cc scooter offering in the Indian two-wheeler market. The new 125cc scooter has been codenamed 04X and will be manufactured at Yamaha India’s upcoming scooter production facility in Chennai. The new 125cc scooter will be based on the Yamaha Nozza Grande that was launched in Vietnam in 2015. The Yamaha Nozza Grande is powered by a fuel-injected motor in the Vietnam market but it is expected that it will be given a miss to cut cost. Expect the 125cc mill to generate around 8PS of peak power and 9.5Nm of torque. The Yamaha 125cc scooter will be pitched against the Honda Activa 125 and the Suzuki Access 125 in our market.

Suzuki Swish facelift

Suzuki Swish facelift

Expected Launch Date: Early 2015

Expected Price: Rs 58,000

Suzuki Motorcycle India has tasted success in the scooter segment with the Suzuki Access and the recently launched Suzuki Lets. Although, the Japanese automobile major introduced the trendy Suzuki Swish 125cc scooter in India, which shares plenty of cycle-parts with the popular Suzuki Access, it could not skyrocket the scale graph. For this purpose it will launch the face lifted version of the Suzuki Swish. It is speculated that it might be the first scooter from Suzuki Motorcycle India to feature a front disc brake, also expect a digital instrument console, alloy wheels and tubeless tyres. In terms of styling, Suzuki Motorcycle India is giving the 125cc scooter a mild makeover, to make the Suzuki Swish more youthful. There’s not much change expected on the mechanical front, as the 2015 Suzuki Swish would continue to sport a 125cc air-cooled motor, with a power output of 8.7PS and torque rating of 9.8Nm, mated to a CVT.

Hero Dash

Hero Dash

Expected Launch Date: Early 2015

Expected Price: Rs 54,000

Hero MotoCorp hasn’t been able to mirror the success it has achieved in the scooter segment like it has achieved in the motorcycle market. But 2015 might be a year that might change this statistic as Hero will bring in a new 110cc scooter christened the Dash. The Hero Dash is a smart looking scooter which will be positioned above the Hero Maestro, and would compete with the likes of TVS Jupiter, Honda Activa and Yamaha Alpha. To give a stiff competition to its rivals, the new Hero Dash scooter will come with plenty of features. These will include an external fuel lid, drum brakes with Integrated Braking System (similar to Honda’s Combi Braking System), maintenance free battery, telescopic front forks, alloy wheels and tubeless tyres. Apart from these Hero Dash will also boast of a large under-seat storage space with light and mobile charger, along with a digital-cum-analogue instrument console which will come with side stand, low fuel and service due indicators. Hero Leap

Hero Leap

Expected Launch Date: Early 2015

Expected Price: Rs 65-70,000

Hero MotoCorp will not restrict its scooter offering to internal combustion engines as it plans to launch the Leap hybrid scooter that was showcased as a concept at the 2012 Auto Expo. The Leap is a serial hybrid scooter with an 8KW electric motor and 124cc petrol mill. It’s got a small 3-litre fuel tank and a range of 340km hinting that it will be a highly efficient scooter. It weighs in at 140kg, quite heavy for a scooter of this size. This is mainly due to the large lithium-ion battery powering it. It’s got 240mm discs up front and drum brakes for the rear wheels. The Hero Leap will definitely among the most highly anticipated scooter launches of 2015 and it will be launched in international markets before makings its debut in the Indian two-wheeler market.

Vespa 946

Vespa 946

Expected Launch Date: Mid 2015

Expected Price: Rs 6-8.00 lakh

Without a shadow of doubt, the 946 with its retro-futuristic design will be the most visually appealing scooter to be launched in the Indian scooter market. The major design highlights of the 946 is its floating saddle which is hinged on a cast aluminium support, full LED headlamp and taillight and LCD instrumentation cluster. The Vespa 946 is powered by a single-cylinder 125cc mill, producing 11.9PS of power and 10.3Nm of torque. Piaggio has loaded the 946 with electronic goodies like disc brakes at the front and rear with ABS (anti-lock braking system) and ASR (anti-slip regulator) Traction Control, which, with the aid of electronic system, helps the rear tyre from slipping. The scooter will come in via CBU route, so expect to shell out a premium to own one.

Piaggio Liberty

Piaggio Liberty

Expected Launch Date: Mid 2015

Expected Price: Rs 60,000

Piaggio has been present in the Indian scooter segment via the brand Vespa. But Vespa hasn’t been able to garner the sales figure as desired by Piaggio owing to its high sticker price and is considered as a niche marquee. But Piaggio plans to bring in the new Liberty which will be more utilitarian on nature than the Vespa for daily use.

Powering the scooter will be the same 125cc engine that is seen on the standard Vespa but it will lose the 3-valve technology to cut cost and will be tuned to deliver better fuel efficiency. Highlights of the Piaggio Liberty will be the 14-inch wheels compared to 10-inch wheels found on most other scooters on sale in India, electronic immobiliser and disc brakes.
