2015 Bajaj Pulsar AS 150

Bajaj Auto Limited has introduced two new bikes - the Pulsar AS 150 and Pulsar AS 200, launching off a new range of sport bikes which the company calls the Adventure Sport series.

Bajaj says the new Adventure Sport range is targeted at the youth and young executives – those who like a sporty bike for the city, as well as for occasional long distance weekend rides.

And the entry-level AS 150 is the first new-generation Pulsar which sits between the executive commuter segment and the higher displacement ‘performance’ class. It’s an important product for Bajaj, providing premium looks, performance and seemingly with decent adventure bike credentials. So, here’s a look at the all-new Pulsar Adventure Sport 150, or AS 150.

Looks:

Both bikes share identical looks and even dimensions, and the first thing which grabs attention is the muscular front fairing and extended visor, to take on long distance riding and wind resistance. The visor though is fixed and not adjustable so we’ll need to see how it fares with riders of different height. And keeping its touring duties in mind, the handlebar is a tall two-piece unit. The only visual difference the AS150 has from its larger sibling is the thinner tyres it’s shod with and the absence of a rear disc brake.

The AS150 also comes equipped with projector headlamps, again in typical Bajaj fashion, another first in its segment. The seat is a split unit, and looks wide and comfortable for both rider and pillion to take on those long rides.  The sharp rear end gets a split grab rail and the trademark Pulsar LED tail lamps. Unlike other Pulsars though, the AS150 gets an underbelly exhaust, tucked in neatly below the engine and protruding just ahead of the side panels.

Engine and Features:

The Pulsar AS150 gets an all-new 149.5cc twin-spark, four-valve air-cooled engine which makes 17PS power at 9500rpm and a maximum torque of 13Nm at 7500rpm. Those are healthy numbers and power figure is the highest in the 150cc segment.

The engine is mounted on a newly-designed perimeter frame, and the bike gets telescopic front forks and a nitrox monoshock rear suspension, to provide rock solid stability and control at high speeds. The braking system includes a 240mm front disc and a 130mm rear drum.

The AS150 tips the scales at 143kg and has a ground clearance of 170mm. The wheels are both 17-inchers and shod with tubeless rubber.

Price and Competition:

At an introductory price of Rs 79,500 (ex-showroom Delhi), Bajaj has priced the Pulsar AS150 quite attractively. With a half-fairing and an extended visor to boot, the Pulsar AS150 will take the fight straight into the territory of the Yamaha Fazer FI V2.0 and the Suzuki Gixxer SF.

Bajaj says the Pulsar range sells 57,000 units every month in the domestic market with a dominant market share of 43 per cent. With class leading power figures and the Pulsar brand to boot, Bajaj is now boasting of creating an altogether new industry segment. The gloves are out, and we’d love to see how the new Pulsar AS150 fares against its competition. Keep watching this space, the 150cc battle is all set to become very very interesting indeed.
