Legendary Italian motorcycle brand MV Agusta has already imported 10 units of the Brutale 1090, ahead of the bike’s impending launch in November. We take a close look at the MV Agusta Brutale 1090 and what it has in store…

2015 MV Agusta Brutale

The Brutale 1090 may just be one of the first bikes to be launched by the Italian manufacturer in November. Muscular naked street styling and exposed high-performance four-cylinder engine clearly point to the lustworthy nature of this Italian streetfighter. Here’s a quick first look at the Brutale 1090…

Looks and Styling:

Controlled aggression – that’s what the Brutale 1090 speaks out, even while standing still. Exotic, sexy, glamorous – these are all adjectives which aptly fit the description of the Brutale 1090. The overall silhouette is quite similar to its smaller sibling the Brutale 800 – muscular, edgy and very, very, attractive.

Large headlight, muscula design

Complementing the Brutale 1090’s muscular silhouette is a large headlight, with daytime running lights, arranged symmetrically on either side of the instrument cluster fairing, enhancing the entire front section. The four cylinder engine has been painted silver, a colour that emphasises its compactness and the careful placement of each of its elements.

The wheels come with split multiple spokes, while the side mounted two twin exhausts - a key element of the Brutale’s configuration, also add to its visual appeal. A single sided swingarm also adds to the two basic inspirational principles of form and function to the Brutale 1090’s design.

The composite frame of the Brutale consists of a high-strength tubular ALS steel front section and two aluminium plates in the single-sided swingarm pivot zone. This configuration provides an optimal balance between efficiency and weight and gives every MV Agusta a highly distinctive look.

Engine and Performance:

The Brutale 1090 is powered by a 1078cc in-line four-cylinder engine, with a bore and stroke of 79mm and 55mm respectively. The in-line four architecture of the Brutale is part of MV Agusta’s history from the heydays of road racing. The double overhead camshaft new engine with four valves per cylinder, arranged in a radial pattern, is unique in the motorcycling industry. It is liquid cooled with a separate radiator cooling the oil.

Internationally, two engine configurations are offered, featuring different maximum power and torque levels.  The Brutale 1090 reaches 144PS at 10,300rpm and 112Nm of torque. The Brutale 1090 RR achieves an impressive 158PS at 11,900rpm and 100Nm of torque at 10,100rpm.

The gearbox is a six speed, constant mesh, and fully removable: another touch that makes MV Agusta bikes exclusive. The multi-plate clutch in an oil bath on the Brutale 1090 RR employs a racetrack derived slipper clutch unit. We’re not sure if only the standard Brutale 1090 will be offered in India or the more powerful 1090 RR will also be offered.

Suspension and Brakes:

MV Agusta claims the Brutale sets the standards for motorcycle riding pleasure and some of it has been attributed directly to the constantly refined and perfected suspension. The 50 mm diameter front fork is fully adjustable by means of special external adjusters with compression on one leg, rebound on the other and spring preload on both. The new fork bottom allows quick release of the front wheel: a touch of functionality typically found only on race bikes.

The response of the monoshock can be fully customised. On the Brutale 1090 the rebound and spring preload are adjustable. On the Brutale 1090 RR there is a wider adjustment range with variable low and high speed hydraulic compression damping, in addition to the spring preload and rebound damping.

MV Agusta Brutale 1090 - high quality components

The braking system employs high quality components with two 310 mm diameter floating front discs on the Brutale 1090 and 320 mm diameter discs on the Brutale 1090 RR; a 210 mm steel disk is fitted to the rear. Both front and rear feature four-piston callipers. The Brutale 1090 RR uses Brembo monobloc front callipers for ultimate braking efficiency at the lowest weight. The ABS system, developed in cooperation with Bosch, is equipped with RLM (Rear wheel Lift-up Mitigation).

Competition and Market Positioning:

Owing to the fact that the MV Agusta Brutale 1090 is a CBU, it won’t come cheap. MV Agusta will be launching the bikes in India in partnership with the Kinetic Group. And it has already been announced that the bikes will cost between Rs 12-33 lakh.

We’re not sure about the pricing of the Brutale 1090, but expect it to be priced anywhere between Rs 17-19 lakh. That certainly puts the MV Agusta in a different league compared to the Japanese litre-class naked offerings from Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki. In the Indian market, what the Brutale 1090 will be competing with are not naked bikes, but the higher end of the cruiser and sportbike segment, including the Harley-Davidson Fat Boy Special, Triumph Thunderbird LT and even the Suzuki Hayabusa.
