Anticipating fresh competition, Audi hots up the game by launching the top-of-the-line Audi Q3 Dynamic

Being number one isn’t easy, but staying there is an even bigger challenge. Till now all that Audi Q3 needed was to crane its neck ahead of the BMW X1, its only true competition currently, to be the boss of the segment. But like they say, two’s company while three’s a crowd. Now that Mercedes-Benz is dolling up the GLA compact-SUV for an Indian debut, Audi digs its heels deeper and hots up the game by launching the Audi Q3 Dynamic, the SUV’s top-of-the-line version.

A closer look at the ‘Dynamic’ new model reveals minor tweaks to the exterior design of the Audi Q3. Like the new full chrome front grille, and faux sump guards design on the front and rear bumpers. It carries forward the Xenon Plus headlights with LED daytime running lights, but at the back gets a new pair of clear-lens taillights which distinguishes the Audi Q3 Dynamic from other Q3s. You can also pick the recently introduced body colour like Florett Silver, Mythos Black and Monsoon Grey to set the Q3 apart. The new version runs on neat looking  five-spoke ‘Trias’ design alloy wheels, shod with 235/55 R17 Pirelli Scorpion high profile tyres promising good ride quality.

The cabin is similar to other Q3 models, with a multi function steering wheel, and a high gloss dashboard with walnut brown inlays. And then we spot the big change signified by the ‘Dynamic’ postfix at the end of the model’s name. What takes this version of the Audi Q3 to a higher pedestal is the Audi’s Drive Select system, which normally makes an appearance on more premium Audi models.

But the difference here is that unlike in bigger Audis where the Drive Select system alters the engine, suspension and steering dynamics, in the Q3 it changes the behaviour of just the suspension. The Audi Q3 Dynamic get three preset driving modes - Comfort, Sport and Auto, which can either be selected by a dedicated button on the dashboard, between the aircon and audio system, or through the MMI computer.

Cranking up the 177PS, 2.0-litre TDI, which also does the duty on other Q3s, we take the Audi Q3 Dynamic for a test run. The Q3 has been an impressive car to drive – nimble and well sprung, as if, cut out for its city duties. Although the sheer performance isn’t astounding, but peak torque of 380Nm developed at an engine speed of only 1,750rpm makes it exciting enough to keep yawn at bay. It accelerates to 100kmph in a claimed 8.2 seconds, and has a limited top speed of 212kmph.

The DSG gearbox is truly a highlight, toggling through the seven clogs seamlessly without hiccups or hesitation, making the driving experience even more tranquil.

In ‘Comfort’ mode the Audi Q3 Dynamic rides like the regular Q3 models, ironing out small ditches in its stride. But up the speed and body-roll creeps in and it aren’t as sharp around corners. Impressively, even in the firmer ‘Dynamic’ mode, it manages to tackle road undulation well and remains planted. During faster turns with the suspension stiffened up, the Q3 feels more surefooted but the change isn’t exceptional.

The biggest advantage the Q3 has over its competition, including the ones yet to be launched, is being the only all-wheel-drive model in the segment. This helps in increasing the exist-speed, so one can step on the gas faster and harder while exiting a corner. Not to forget the occasional off-road adventure drive where the 4x4 can come handy too. This coupled with the Hill Assist and Auto hold features makes the Q3 better equipped for tricky situations. Only if the Audi had a more communicative steering system, it would have been a perfectly rounded product. However, the light and well-assisted steering is easy for city driving, especially while parking.

2014 Audi Q3 Dynamic buying advice

The Audi Q3 Dynamic is priced at Rs 38.40 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai), and sits above the Q3 Premium Plus variant, commanding a premium of Rs 90,000 over it. For those who buy the Q3 to drive and not just for the four-ringed badge, putting the extra dough for the better equipped Dynamic version will be a smarter move.
