The S80 receives a facelift and paddle shifters on the top-end variant, opens new lounge at Delhi airport

Updated Volvo S80 launched in India

Volvo has launched the updated S80 in India at Rs 41.35 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi for the base D4 variant. The D5 variant is priced at Rs 44.80 lakh. The much needed refresh spruces up the outdated S80 which was almost a non-starter in the luxury sedan segment.

The update to the S80 includes a new bumper that houses redesigned fog lamps and a grille that’s now flush with the front end. The grille itself is in line with the rest of the Volvo range with horizontal chrome slats and the large Volvo logo housed in the centre. Other updates include daytime running lights and dual exhaust tailpipes.

On the inside, the S80 receives a new digital instrument cluster with three themes that change according to the way you drive. These include Elegance, Eco and Performance. The biggest addition to the S80 is the paddle shifters to the D5 Summum trim. The S80 also gets Volvo’s city safety technology that automatically brakes the car under 50kmph in emergency braking situations pretty much making it impossible to crash the car at slow speeds.

The S80 comes with a choice of two engines – a 2.0-litre five cylinder diesel developing 165PS and 400Nm of torque in the D4 and 218PS of power and 440Nm of torque in the D5.  The engines come mated to a 6-speed automatic and the cars are limited to a top speed of 215kmph in the D4 and 225kmph in the D5.

Since the S80 is a CBU like all Volvos sold in India and comes with a weak service back up, it will be difficult road ahead despite the updates. Otherwise in terms of safety, space, comfort and efficiency, the S80 is right up there among the best in class.

Volvo also opened doors to its first ever airport lounge today at the IGI Airport in Delhi where its cars will be displayed.
