Volkswagen had been testing the more powerful diesel Polo GT TDI in India for a while now leading to numerous speculations about the car’s launch. Putting an end to those rumours Volkswagen has launched the Polo GT TDI at Rs 8.08 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
Powered by the 1.6 litre TDI engine that does duty in the VW Vento and Skoda Rapid, the Volkswagen Polo GT TDI packs 105PS of power and 250Nm of torque, making it the most powerful premium diesel hatchback in the country. The engine is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox as is the case with its sedan counterpart. Judging by the lower weight of the Polo, the GT TDI should be able to go from standstill to 100km/h in about 10 seconds and onwards to a top speed slightly over the Vento’s claimed 178km/h mark. The Polo GT TDI has an ARAI-certified mileage figure of 19.78 kmpl.
Like the petrol Polo GT hot hatch launched earlier in 2013, the Polo GT TDI comes loaded with a host of equipment such as climate control, a multifunction vehicle info display for the driver, remote central locking armed with engine immobilizer with floating code, anti-pinch power windows, lane change indicator, ABS, dual airbags, rear defogger and wash wipe, front and rear fog lamps, a double din Bluetooth, SD card and USB enabled stereo with steering mounted controls, leather wrapped steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake, 12V power outlet in centre console, chrome interior trim and an aluminium pedal cluster.
Commenting on the launch of the New Polo GT TDI, Arvind Saxena, Managing Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Volkswagen Group Sales India, said “We are committed to bringing in the latest and the most efficient vehicle technologies to the Indian market. The New Polo GT TDI has been created to cater to the requirements of discerning customers, who want the best possible mix of strong power delivery, outstanding driving dynamics and class-leading fuel efficiency.”
The Volkswagen Polo GT TDI will be available in three shades only, namely, Candy White, Flash Red, Deep Black Pearl. And while the price tag is on the heavier side, the Polo GT TDI’s performance will indeed appeal to performance-oriented diesel hatchback buyers.
