Terra Motors Kiwami launch

Terra Motors Corporation, the premiere manufacturer of electric two and three-wheelers in Japan, made its debut in the Indian market by introducing-Kiwami. The word Kiwami, in English translates to ‘Ultimate’ and according to Terra Motors can compete with 1000cc superbikes in terms of performance and has been priced at Rs 18 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

This unique new offering is powered by a 13PS electric motor. Although the power output seems equivalent to a 125cc motorcycle due to clever combination of technology and innovation, the company claims that the Kiwami has the performance attributes of a litre-class superbike. The Japanese manufacturer claims that the Kiwami can attain a top speed of 160km/h. Powered by an electric motor with a high torque rating, the Kiwami is sure to have blistering fast acceleration right from the word go. The hand-built motorcycle takes six hours for a complete charge and can cover a distance of close to 200km. The company claims that this is the highest running figure for any electric motorcycle to be sold in India. Also read: Mission Motorcycles electric superbike

Commenting on the foray of the company in India, Toru Tokushige, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Founder of Terra Motors said, “India is the second largest producer of two-wheelers in the world. Hence it is an important market in our strategic growth plan and we intend to invest Rs. 300 million in the Indian market next fiscal year. With this mission, Terra Motors is set to deliver electric vehicle (EV) of high quality and services in the tradition of what consumers in India come to appreciate and expect from the Japanese industry.”

Since the Kiwami is powered by an electric motor it leaves zero carbon footprint and will impress the eco-friendly brigade.  But the biggest obstacle for the Kwigami is its pricing, the electric sportsbike has been priced at Rs 18 lakh and at this price point one can get hold of a hardcore litre-class superbike, which offers close to twice its top speed. Terra Motors will also introduce its range of e-scooters and a three-wheeler option that will be showcased at the upcoming 2014 Auto expo.
