BMW M3 and M4 launched in India

BMW enthusiasts have reasons to celebrate as the highly anticipated M3 sedan and M4 Coupe have been launched in India at Rs 1.20 crore and 1.22 crore respectively, all prices ex-showroom.  The M3 and M4 will take on the new Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG (coming next year) and V6 Jaguar F-Type in the sedan and coupe battle.

Powering both cars is a new 3.0-litre in-line six cylinder engine pumping out 437PS of peak power between 5500-7300rpm and 550Nm of peak torque from 1850-5500rpm. BMW has opted for a lower capacity unit compared to the V8 predecessor but there is no loss in power, in fact it is about 17PS more. The hike is output is courtesy two turbochargers, but to keep acceleration as linear and un-turbo like as possible, they stay at part spool at all times. Power goes to the rear wheels and propels the cars in the 0-100kmph sprint in just 4.1 seconds. Top speed is limited to 250kmph. The M3 and M4 headed for India will only get a seven-speed M double clutch gearbox and not the manual unit.

Performance spec Michelin tyres transmit power to the tarmac - 255/40 ZR18s in the front and 275/40 ZR18s in the rear. As expected the larger 19 inch wheels haven’t come to India and that’s a good thing.

On the styling front, the M3 is based on the 3-series and the M4 on the 4-series. They look almost identical but get the full M-treatment nonetheless. Bonnet bulges, muscular bumpers, extensive use of carbon fibre, aluminium, a bit of magnesium and all the light weighting you can expect for a car of this class and more is part of the M3 and M4 resume. The two get a full aero package as well from air curtains undercarriage bits.
