Piaggio expanded its Indian product portfolio by launching the Vespa Elegante with a sticker price of Rs 78,999 (ex-showroom Delhi). ZigWheels had reported back in July that Vespa will be launching the Elegante prior to the festive season and our estimated pricing was also bang on at Rs 79,000. (Exclusive! Vespa Elegante to launch in India). According to Vespa officials the new Elegante is a limited edition offering based on the Vespa VX. In terms of design, subtle changes have been made on the new scooter to make it more visually appealing. Design details on the new Vespa Elegante include a shield shaped front grille, round headlamp and chrome guards. The most striking design detail is the retro looking colour coordinated leather finished twin seats that makes the scooter stand apart from its siblings. To further distinguish the new offering, the Vespa Elegante will sport a limited edition badge.
Vespa Elegante customer will also get a colour coordinated limited edition half-face helmet along with the new scooter. The scooter will be available in new metallic shades of Bianco perla (white) and Marrone Crete Senesi (brown). The new Vespa Elegante will be powered by the same 125cc, single-cylinder, 3-valave, air-cooled motor serving 10PS of peak power and a maximum torque of 10.6Nm, as seen on other Vespa models in India. The Vespa S employs traditional single-side hydraulic shock absorbers at front and hydraulic monoshock at the rear.
Speaking at the launch, Ravi Chopra, Chairman and Managing Director, Piaggio Vehicles Private Limited (India) said, “Piaggio is delighted to offer the stylish limited edition Vespa Elegante for its Indian fans. The Limited Edition Vespa Elegante symbolizes Piaggio’s ownership of the premium scooter segment that the group has successfully created in the Indian market. With its classy yet quirky designs, Vespa Elegante will be a proud possession of any real Vespa enthusiast.”
Braking duties are taken care by 200mm dia ventilated disc brakes at front and drum brakes at rear whereas tubeless tyres are standard. The Italian two-wheeler manufacturer has set itself a target of selling 3,000 units of the new scooter in the first two months. But given its premium pricing it seems an uphill task but Vespa is relying on the festive season to boost its sales. Vespa will also hold special previews of the Elegante at Pune, Hyderabad and Bangalore. Bookings for the Vespa Elegante have started with deliveries expected to commence by the festive season.
