BMW has officially confirmed its plan to build a new plant in Mexico. This new plant will be located in the state of San Luis Potosi, and will start building cars in the year 2019. For building this new facility, BMW intends to invest approximately Rs 600 crore in the next few years.

According to Harald Kruger, Member of the BMW AG Board of Management, the company’s decision to start a plant in Mexico underscores its commitment to the North American Free trade Agreement (NAFTA). He states that the Mexico plant has a capacity to build 1,50,000 car units annually. Kruger claims that this plant will help the German carmaker to take advantage of the growth potential in the North American region.

BMW joins premium rivals Audi and Daimler in setting up plants in Mexico to benefit from its low labour costs and the NAFTA, which provides access to the key US car market, the world’s second largest.

The new Mexico plant is an addition to BMW’s existing American plants including the car facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina and an existing motorcycle plant in Brazil. The German manufacturer has also started constructing a car plant in Brazil which is expected to be operational by next year.
