Yamaha may be working to upgrade its scooter line-up and more importantly its electric scooter line up, with a new leaning three-wheeled scooter.

Yamaha has reportedly filed patents with the European and U.S. Patent Office for a leaning electric three-wheeler, most likely a scooter based on the Yamaha EC-03 electric scooter.

While most new three-wheeled scooters add the extra wheel to the front end, including Yamaha’s recently revealed Tricity, the new design will be a more traditional trike set up, with two wheels at the rear. But what is unique is that the bike will be able to lean and this is what Yamaha is filing patents for.

The two wheeled EC-03 makes about 1.8PS @ 2550rpm and 9.6Nm at only 280rpm. It’s likely that Yamaha may be using this same motor to power the leaning electric trike. And considering it’s an existing platform already in production, it may not be too long before we get to see the electric leaning trike.
