The Peugeot scooters are said to have been imported by Mahindra Two Wheelers for R&D purpose in India

News that made headline last month was about Mahindra Two Wheeler acquiring a chuck of stake in renowned auto maker Peugeot’s two-wheeler division - Peugeot Motorcycles (PMTS). According to reports Mahindra shelled out about Rs 116 crore to finance projects through the strategic partnership with PMTS, and in turn acquired 51 per cent stake in PMTC.

This partnership would help Mahindra Two Wheeler get access to European technology and knowhow which Peugeot Motorcycle possess, which is vital for the Indian company as it is still striving to get a strong foothold in the two-wheeler industry.

It was expected that Mahindra Two-wheeler would consider introducing some of Peugeot Motorcycle’s models to India, as Mahindra and Mahindra has done in the past with Ssangyong SUVs. As if on cue, spy images of Peugeot scooter from Mahindra facility cropped up online.

In all there are four Peugeot scooters which have been spotted in India including Speedfight, StreetZone and CityStar. The compact Speedfight 3 Jet and StreetZone are powered by puny 50cc motors and make a good design study for Mahindra Two Wheeler for its future scooter models. While CityStar comes powered by a 125cc unit. Needless to say, all the four Peugeot scooters come equipped with automatic transmission.

Speaking about the acquisition, Pawan Goenka, Executive Director, Mahindra and Mahindra had said, “The coming together of Mahindra and Peugeot is a win-win for the two wheeler business of both companies. Mahindra would offer access to the Indian market, mass market product technology and competence in marketing while Peugeot brings premium range, a strong European footprint, and a globally recognized brand. This partnership will enable both MTWL and PMTC to speed their international expansion by driving synergies and leveraging respective strengths of both parties.”

Mahindra Two Wheels seems to have imported these scooters for R&D purpose for now, but we expect that with the help of this takeover the Indian company would be launching more robust and technically advanced products in our market sooner than we expect.
