Volkswagen has announced details of the technical fixes to be carried out on the 1.6 and 2.0 litre diesel mills bringing them under required emission levels.

Volkswagen

Amid the recent legal procedures against the VW Group for the violation of emission norms, the German manufacturer has announced the technical fixes which will make the E189 engine compatible with the required standards. The technical fixes have been worked upon for both 1.6 and 2.0 litre engine without causing any change to the performance and fuel consumption. Volkswagen is having the technical fixes tested on all model variants before confirmation can be given to the required target figures. On the basis of the test figures achieved and accepted by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority, the necessary service camps will be organised. Implementation of the technical fixes will be commenced from January 2015. To cover all engine variants by carrying out the required service measures VW could be seen carrying out the procedures throughout the whole year for 2016.

Volkswagen technical fixes

The 1.6 TDI engine (EA 189) will be installed with a ‘flow straightener’ which will replace the existing section connecting the air filter box to the air mass sensor. With the swapped part, the mesh will stabilize the air flow and cancel the swirling effect of the air. The job of an air mass sensor is to read the rate at which the air enters the engine, based on which it sends the signal to the engine management system which further decides the optimal quantity of fuel to be injected for achieving complete combustion from the engine. In addition to the part, VW will also be performing a software update on the vehicle’s engine management system. The overall turnaround time comes to one hour to carry out the same.

The 2.0 litre engines on the other hand will get only a software update. As there are no replacements of parts, the time required to perform the procedure will be half an hour as informed by VW officials.
Both the service measures will be carried out without any cost to the customers. Also VW aims to carry out the technical fixes without affecting the mobility of the customer in any way. Other brands which fall under the VW group umbrella – Audi, Seat, Skoda, and VW commercial vehicles also plans to carry out the technical fixes on the affected vehicle respectively.

On a similar platform VW will present the test figures for the 1.2 litre three cylinder diesel engine to the Federal Motor Transport Authority by the end of the month.
