Volvo justifies its affinity toward safety by coming up with the revolutionary auto brake technology

Volvo's new city safety system, designed to help drivers avoid or reduce the severity of low speed urban collisions has won in the technology category of the fleet world honours awards in London. The first car to be getting this feature will be the new Volvo XC60 which arrives in the UK showrooms this October.

Chairman of Judges George Emerson said : "Volvo's commitment to researching and developing groundbreaking technologies has led to a number of safety milestones. City Safety is among the cleverest so far, predicting when low-speed accidents will happen and preventing them from occurring. City Safety will offer fleets financial, operational and social benefits that deserve recognition."

The City Safety System uses a laser technology to detect vehicles upto 10 meters in front of the cars bumper and reacts to any vehicles in the front either standing still or moving slowly in the same direction as the car itself. At speeds of under 19 mph, if the distance between the cars continues to decrease and there is no input from the driver the car applies the brake automatically.

The system can potentially reduce both personal injuries as well as car bodywork damage. Also if the system works as planned insurance costs may also be cut, with Volvo already involved in talks with insurance companies to lower premiums on cars equipped with the City Safety System.

Volvo car UK's corporate sales and leasing manager said that the surveys indicated 75% of all collisions reported take place at speeds under 18 mph with the driver not having braked at all before the collision. With the City Safety System in place the potential to reduce such incidents will be extremely good.He also said that along with safety benefits the system also offers significant operational improvements which are good news for businesses and he was glad the judges recognized this.
