It hasn’t even been six months since Volvo pulled the wraps off its S80 replacement, the S90 at a very special event in Gothenburg and already the Swedish car maker has revealed the estate version of its flagship sedan called the V90, this time in Stockholm. If there was ever a beautiful wagon, this would be it. Aesthetically, the V90 has the looks to kill for. It shares its front fascia with the S90 sedan complete with its wide P1800 inspired waterfall grille which is flanked by two beautifully designed headlamps intact with Thor’s hammer LED DRLs. The overall design of the car is simplistic and well proportioned for example the long roof is perfectly parallel to the long bonnet of the car which helps give this station wagon an air of elegance. Moving to the rear, the tailgate is well contoured with sleek LED taillamps and an extra wide windscreen.
The interiors echo the S90 which is frankly, great. Volvo’s brilliant infotainment system dominates the centre of the dashboard with a liberal use of wood and tasteful accents enhance the overall styling and feel of the interior. And internationally it will come with all safety features that Volvo can fit into the car. The gem among which is the self-explanatory, Pilot Assist semi-autonomous drive technology. In India however, thes pilot assist could be missed but active park assist, pedestrian and animal recognition, active braking assist and lane departure warning could make it to the V90 on our roads.
The V90 is also built on the Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture and the powertrains are carried over as well. The top of the line T8 plug-in hybrid will come with the 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged and supercharged engine making 410PS which happens to be 10PS more than the S90 and the XC90. It also boasts of an all-electric range of 50km. When launched, it will slot between the mid and full size luxury sedans and should be a viable option for someone who wants something more than say, a 5-series but the 7-series proves to be a bit much.
Though launch dates aren’t clear yet, one thing is certain that Volvo does see India as an important market and they will be getting the V90 to India. But to hope that the car will be here before 2017 is being a bit too optimistic.
