Volkswagen unveils 272PS diesel TDI engine

Volkswagen’s diesel engines or TDI engines as they are more popularly known, power the likes of Audis, Skodas and Seats the world over along with cars from Volkswagen itself. Although there are several engines in the lower strata of the diesel power plant family, Volkswagen has just launched a new 2.0-litre TDI engine with 272PS of peak power on tap and 550Nm of peak torque.

The engine, essentially a more powerful version of the 2.0-litre engine which powers the new generation Passat, will have a twin turbo setup with an additional electric supercharger. Apart from the supercharger adding extra overall boost to bump the power figures up, Volkswagen has also cranked up the boost output of the two turbos and injector pressure in the common rail diesel setup.

The two turbochargers spool at different pressures creating optimum boost. The smaller turbo, with a variable geometry spools early subsequently giving way to a larger fixed geometry turbo which spins at a higher point of the rev range. Other modifications include a variable valve train with optimised ignition timing and optimised gas exchange cycles. The new engine will be available on the Passat in the future and on other more powerful variants of the Jetta and the Golf. The engine will also be available on the next generation Skoda Superb and the Audi A4. The engine will most likely be mated to the new 10-speed DSG gearbox and an all-wheel-drive chassis.
